A medevac plane carrying six people disappeared over the water during its flight from Bermuda to Boston after the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration lost contact with it, while air and sea teams began extensive search operations off the coast of Nantucket Island in Massachusetts.
Reports indicate that the plane descended rapidly by about 7,500 feet before crashing into the water, while authorities have not yet announced the fate of the individuals on board.
A spokesperson for the Federal Aviation Administration told The Guardian that the agency issued an alert to begin search and rescue operations for a Gulfstream G-100 aircraft at around 1:20 AM local time.
The plane, registered in Canada, was carrying four crew members and two passengers when it departed from L.F. Wade International Airport in Bermuda at night heading to Massachusetts, according to a statement from Skyport, the operator of Bermuda Airport, obtained by the Associated Press.
The plane was on a medical evacuation mission
NBC News reported that Clarence Tuggeritz, the director of flight operations at Latitude Air Ambulance, the operator of the plane, stated that the aircraft was on a medical evacuation mission in Bermuda.
Tuggeritz said the company feels concerned when its crew members do not communicate with them on time, but he emphasized that losing contact does not necessarily mean the worst-case scenario has occurred.
In Boston, the Massachusetts Port Authority, which manages Logan International Airport, confirmed that the plane did not arrive as scheduled.
A spokesperson for the authority said, "Our thoughts are with those on board the plane and their loved ones as search operations continue."
Search operations off the coast of Nantucket
The Federal Aviation Administration is coordinating search efforts with the U.S. Coast Guard and the Rescue Coordination Center to locate the plane.
The Coast Guard stated that the search area, on Saturday morning, is located off the coast of Nantucket Island in Massachusetts.
Air and sea teams have begun search operations for the plane, while efforts continue to determine its location and the fate of the six individuals on board.
Reports of the plane's rapid descent
ABC News reported that a source familiar with the investigations indicated that none of the passengers on the plane were American, but the identities of the individuals on board have not been immediately released.
The source added that officials believe the plane descended rapidly by about 7,500 feet before crashing into the water.
Authorities have not yet announced confirmed details regarding the reason for the loss of contact with the plane, while search and rescue operations continue in the maritime area off the coast of Massachusetts.
