Rescue teams in Afghanistan managed to extract 10 workers alive after they were trapped for two days inside a gold mine in Takhar province in the north of the country.
According to the Associated Press, the workers had been trapped inside a mine in the Samti area of the Chah Ab district before rescue teams succeeded in reaching them and bringing them all out alive after two days underground.
Collapse inside the mine
Local reports indicated that a tunnel inside the gold mine collapsed while the workers were underground, leading to their entrapment, while rescue teams and local authorities rushed to the site and began search operations for them.
Local officials and rescue teams participated in monitoring the operation, amid fears for the workers' lives as they remained trapped for long hours underground, before the operation concluded with their rescue.
Another incident claims the lives of 5 workers
Just days after the rescue operation, the same district witnessed another incident, as authorities announced on Saturday the death of 5 workers following the collapse of a gold mine in the Shah Mastan area.
The spokesperson for Takhar police, Qari Naqibullah Masroor, confirmed the death of the five workers, without disclosing further details about the circumstances of the collapse.
Recurring incidents
