In a world filled with titles and degrees, one of the bastions of higher education in Nigeria has fallen into a shocking scandal, after an investigative report revealed that the Vice President of "Michael and Cecilia Ibru University" (MCIU), the public figure and well-known television face Anthony Kila, is holding his position based on a fictitious academic rank and non-existent institutions.
Mr. Kila has long dominated the academic and media scene in Nigeria, donning the cloak of "Professor" and "Jean Monnet Professor of Strategy and Development," presenting himself as a widely knowledgeable professor, researcher, and author. However, the investigation conducted by "Premium Times" completely dismantled this image, proving that the man has never obtained a professorship from any accredited institution.
When journalists confronted Kila with the truth, he claimed that the European Center for Advanced and Professional Studies (ECAPS) based in Cambridge awarded him the title in 2016. But the shocking revelation from legal and commercial research in the UK and Nigeria is that this institution does not exist at all and only appears in Mr. Kila's own resumes!
The web of deceit did not stop there, as Kila claimed a connection to the Jean Monnet program of the European Union. Here, the European Education and Culture Executive Agency (EACEA) quickly denied this assertion entirely, confirming that his name does not appear in any registry of coordinators or accredited researchers since at least 2015.
Even in terms of scientific output, the investigation revealed that his profile on Google Scholar includes research and books he has no connection to, while his page on ResearchGate is devoid of any real publications despite being adorned with the title "Full Professor." As journalistic scrutiny tightened, the institute associated with him (CIAPS) hurried to disable its website and remove his misleading profile in a desperate attempt to contain the scandal.
This resounding fall of the Vice President of a major university opens the door wide to serious questions about the fragility of auditing mechanisms in some African academic institutions, and how a "Professor of Illusion" managed to deceive the leadership of one of the foremost higher education institutions in Africa.
