When a daily study schedule turns into a dramatic play featuring a child filled with fear and a mother losing her nerves, the digital space becomes a stage for a sharp societal divide. This was summarized in a video that spread like wildfire across social media platforms in Egypt, documenting the harsh moments experienced by a child who found himself threatened with jail due to "homework."
The story began with a traditional attempt by a mother to force her child to complete his homework, but she resorted to a parenting method that later sparked a storm of criticism, as she started to scare him by telling him that the police would come to take him away and throw him in jail for neglecting his studies. The camera captured the details while the child was engulfed in a hysterical crying fit, trying to appease his mother, who was adamant in her stance, repeating in a trembling voice the phrases of a scared innocent: "I love you... I don’t want to go to jail."
Amidst his pleas and his breakdown from fear of imaginary prison chains, the mother continued to pressure him before finally relenting to calm him down with a brief statement assuring him that she would not do that. And although the situation inside the room ended, its repercussions spilled into the public domain as soon as the video was posted, igniting social media platforms between two distant factions.
This video opened a wide door for debate about modern and traditional parenting methods, as a large segment of commentators launched a sharp attack on the mother's behavior, considering that scaring children with issues of jail and police leaves deep psychological scars and instills a pathological fear that is difficult to erase. Opponents also strongly criticized the principle of filming moments of children's vulnerability and displaying them publicly for the sake of documentation or drawing attention.
On the other hand, another group tried to excuse the mother, suggesting that the situation might have stemmed from a momentary frustration and immense psychological and social pressures that parents suffer from due to their children's stubbornness and the pressures of academic curricula, considering that what happened was merely a fleeting pressure tactic that failed in its expression. Among those who see the scene as a heavy joke and those who consider it a violation of children's rights, the incident remains a reflective mirror of the challenges of parenting in the age of digital platforms.
