Minutes before takeoff, while the passengers had already boarded the plane, the flight was unexpectedly halted inside Istanbul Airport. The reason was not a technical malfunction or weather conditions, but a court decision that left the aircraft on the ground due to a financial debt of millions of dollars.
The Turkish judiciary seized a plane belonging to the Iranian company "Caspian Airlines" due to financial dues amounting to $3.4 million owed to a Turkish company, according to Turkish and Iranian media reports on Tuesday.
The aircraft, a "Boeing 737," had completed the boarding procedures and was preparing for departure on Monday before Turkish authorities intervened and prevented it from taking off.
Caspian Airlines announced that one of its planes faced "temporary operational restrictions" due to an administrative issue in Turkey, without providing additional details about the nature of the action in its statement.
For its part, Iranian state television confirmed the incident, explaining that passengers were forced to leave the aircraft, noting that the matter relates to a debt of $3.4 million for services provided at Istanbul Airport.
According to the Turkish "Anadolu" agency, lawyers representing the creditor company arrived at the airport accompanied by enforcement officers to execute the court's seizure order against the aircraft.
The reports did not directly link the seizure decision to the American measures imposed on the Iranian aviation sector, although Iranian airlines are simultaneously facing increasing pressure due to sanctions and operational isolation.
This incident comes at a time when the Iranian aviation sector is facing escalating restrictions after the United States imposed sanctions on the entire sector at the beginning of September, threatening to take action against foreign companies that assist it, which could in turn expose them to being blacklisted.
In this context, the General Civil Aviation Authority announced the suspension of flights by Iranian airlines to and from the UAE starting September 24, until further notice, indicating that the decision came in light of the American ban imposed on Iranian airlines and their use of airports in several countries around the world.
The repercussions did not stop there, as "Mahan Air," one of the leading Iranian airlines, announced the suspension of all its flights to Turkey at the request of Ankara.
Additionally, Najaf International Airport in Iraq announced the halt of all flights coming from and going to Iran until further notice, as the effects of the restrictions and sanctions began to gradually appear on Iranian aviation at several airports and regional destinations.
As the scope of the restrictions widened, Iranian airlines were forced to cancel several of their international flights, while a travel agency in Tehran reported to AFP the suspension of flights to Baghdad and several capitals in the region, in addition to Georgia and Azerbaijan, while other destinations, including China, remained available.
