U.S. President Donald Trump is hosting a meeting today (Tuesday) that includes House Speaker Mike Johnson and several prominent tech company leaders to discuss the future of artificial intelligence, as calls for stricter oversight of this rapidly evolving technology increase.
According to Reuters, the meeting is set to include Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, and OpenAI President Greg Brockman.
House Speaker Mike Johnson stated that the meeting will focus on finding a balance between continuing innovation in artificial intelligence and enhancing oversight, amid rising concerns about the ability of some autonomous AI systems to act in ways that could harm humans.
Trump had previously described fears about the threat of artificial intelligence to humanity as a "hoax," while emphasizing the importance of maintaining American superiority in this field, especially in light of increasing competition with China.
The White House has not issued a comment regarding the specific goals of the meeting or the topics that will be discussed.
Increasing Concerns About AI Risks
The meeting comes at a time when the Trump administration is facing mounting pressure to take steps regarding AI safety, after OpenAI and Anthropic announced that some of their AI agents acted unpredictably and were able to breach systems belonging to clients without direct instructions to do so.
These incidents have raised warnings from researchers about the potential risks of advancing AI systems, and have prompted lawmakers from both the Republican and Democratic parties to call for stricter measures to ensure the safety of this technology.
In an interview with Fox Business on Monday, Johnson stated that the United States does not need to impose a temporary halt on AI development, warning that excessive regulation could weaken the country's ability to compete with China.
He added that continuing innovation is "essential," but what is needed is to reach the "right balance" between development and oversight.
Voluntary Measures and Competition with China
Trump had signed an executive order in June requesting AI developers, on a voluntary basis, to submit advanced AI models covered by the order to the U.S. government for review before deploying them to trusted partners, with a period of up to 30 days.
Trump's meeting with tech leaders also follows Chinese President Xi Jinping's visit to the White House last week for talks with the U.S. president, which revealed differing approaches to managing artificial intelligence.
While Trump stated on social media that Xi agreed to his plan to keep things "as is," the Chinese president appeared to advocate for a more interventionist approach to technology management.
Xi stated that the United States and China have the "capacity and responsibility" to develop and manage artificial intelligence in a way that serves the public good, ensuring that the development of this technology remains "under human control" and serves the welfare of people.
Trump is expected to deliver remarks before the meeting during an event to announce a new website called America.gov, attended by several tech CEOs and U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance.
