Streets in New York City have turned into waterways after floods swept through coastal areas, in a scene that prompted residents in the Queens neighborhood to use boats to navigate amid rising water levels.
Videos published by American media showed residents boarding boats in the flooded areas, while parts of the city and surrounding states faced widespread disruptions due to the "Nor'easter" storm hitting the East Coast of the United States.
The New York authorities declared a state of emergency in several areas after weather agencies warned of heavy rains, strong winds, and coastal flooding, with expectations of dangerous conditions continuing over the weekend. City officials had warned of winds that could reach gusts of about 80 kilometers per hour, with the possibility of fallen trees and power lines.
The storm's effects extended to New Jersey, where the state declared a state of emergency in 8 coastal counties, with expectations of widespread tidal flooding, strong winds, and high waves. Authorities warned that the rising tide could make some roads impassable, especially in coastal and low-lying areas.
In New York, the storm resulted in the death of a 56-year-old man in Brooklyn after a tree fell on him while he was in a parking lot, according to the city's housing authority. The winds also caused trees and power lines to fall in other areas, leading to road closures and traffic disruptions.
This coincided with disruptions in transportation services, as authorities reported flooding that led to the suspension of some train services in parts of Long Island, while several airports in the region experienced delays and cancellations due to the weather conditions. The number of delayed flights reached about 2,459, compared to 439 canceled flights according to "FlightAware" data during the peak impact of the storm.
The storm also caused widespread power outages, with the number of homes and facilities affected by power cuts exceeding 100,000 in parts of the northeastern United States, coinciding with strong winds, heavy rains, and high waves.
These conditions come at a time when the northeastern United States is facing one of the strongest coastal storms during this period, with its effects extending from areas near Washington to New England states.
Nor'easter storms typically bring strong winds, heavy rains, and high waves, and when they coincide with high tide, they can exacerbate coastal flooding, especially in low-lying areas, islands, and sandbars along the coast.
The National Weather Service warned of dangerous coastal conditions, while authorities urged residents to avoid flooded roads and adhere to emergency instructions, as the storm's effects continue over the weekend.
