The Celestine Square in the French city of Lyon woke up on Wednesday morning to a fleeting scene that lasted only a few minutes, but left behind a shattered storefront and an open security investigation. Four individuals targeted a jewelry store in the heart of the city before quickly fleeing in a stolen car, while phone cameras captured part of the operation that quickly spread across social media.
A video showed three men dressed entirely in black approaching the (Edenly) store, which had only been open for a few months, at the corner of Celestine Square and Archer Street, in an area considered one of the prominent commercial sites in the Lyon peninsula.
With swift movements, blows rained down on the glass facade of the store, before the pieces scattered and the scene transformed within seconds into a rapid robbery. Despite the sound of alarm bells, the thieves managed to seize what they wanted and then rushed toward a white Renault Clio that was waiting for them outside.
The surprise was that the car itself did not belong to them, as it was stolen and bore the logo of (Geoffroy), adding another link to the chain of events leading up to their escape. As soon as the perpetrators got into the car, it sped away quickly, driven by a fourth person, in a scene that nearly turned into another accident when one of the thieves came close to being run over while trying to flee the area.
As the four disappeared into the streets of Lyon, security agencies began to mobilize to identify them and track their escape route. The union of internal security leaders reported that the investigation is still ongoing, and that security forces continue to search for the suspects, while the total value of the jewelry stolen by the thieves has not yet been determined.
This store was not the first of its kind targeted in the area within a few days; another jewelry store in the old district of Lyon experienced a robbery last week when an armed man held two employees hostage inside a room in the store before leaving with jewelry valued at over 130,000 euros.
Between one incident and another, jewelry stores in Lyon seem to be living to the rhythm of rapid thefts, starting with the sound of shattering glass and ending with a car disappearing into the city's hustle and bustle, leaving behind recorded scenes and open questions about the identity of the perpetrators and the value of what they took with them.
