Stanford University has acknowledged that one of its departments used an image that was altered by artificial intelligence, in violation of the university's policy that prohibits changing images of individuals associated with it using this technology.
The university's Department of Housing and Dining distributed an altered image that replaced student Billy Ramirez, who appeared in the original photo, with a Black female student generated by AI.
Ramirez told the "Stanford Review" that he realized immediately upon seeing the modified version that it had been changed, explaining that his exclusion from the image and the alteration of his identity made him feel as though his presence had been "erased" from a scene he was supposed to represent.
A university spokesperson confirmed to "People" magazine that the image was modified using artificial intelligence, noting that this violated Stanford's policy and that the university removed the materials that included the image.
The spokesperson explained that the university's policy prohibits the use of artificial intelligence to produce or modify images of individuals, events, research, facilities, and achievements associated with Stanford, pointing out that the alteration, along with the failure to disclose it, constituted a clear violation of this policy.
He added that the university intends to provide additional training for staff and enhance review procedures for materials before publication to avoid the recurrence of such incidents.
According to the "New York Times," the original photo was taken during an event held in 2024 to celebrate the Lunar New Year, and Ramirez was then a senior student studying Human Biology.
The modification did not stop at replacing Ramirez, as the altered version included visual changes to the appearance of two other students who appeared in the original photo, without replacing them.
