In a notable move amidst escalating tensions between President Donald Trump and the media, First Lady Melania Trump's office allowed journalists from CNN and Politico to cover an event she held in New York, just days after the White House banned the three media outlets—CNN, MS NOW, and Politico—from accessing its premises.
The permission for coverage of Melania Trump's event, held on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly meetings in New York on Tuesday, was part of an activity related to her initiative "Fostering the Future Together," aimed at promoting children's welfare, including issues of education and technology.
CNN reported that the First Lady's office approved a correspondent from the network to cover the event and granted similar credentials to Politico journalists. The accreditation for the CNN correspondent was approved on Sunday, just one day after the White House's decision to bar the network and MS NOW and Politico from entering its premises took effect.
This comes at a time when Trump is facing an escalating confrontation with the three media outlets, having announced on September 18 that they were banned from the White House, accusing them of spreading what he termed "fake news." The following day, journalists from CNN, MS NOW, and Politico were denied entry to the White House complex, and some of their access credentials were confiscated.
The impact of the decision was not limited to access to the White House building, as CNN's exclusion from participating in the president's regular televised coverage had broader implications for the "press pool" system, through which major media organizations take turns covering the president's movements and events where it is difficult to allow all journalists to attend.
Simultaneously, CNN, MS NOW, and Politico filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration, arguing that the restrictions imposed on them violate press rights as outlined in the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, with a hearing scheduled for the case in federal court on September 23.
Despite the White House's ban, the three media organizations continued to cover Trump's movements outside the White House, utilizing credentials issued by other entities.
During his participation in the United Nations meetings, Trump confronted CNN correspondent Kaitlan Collins, expressing his objection to the network's presence to cover his events, while the correspondent clarified that it was the United Nations that allowed her to enter.
