The death of four-year-old Hajar shook the Iraqi street after she passed away minutes after being pulled from a deep well in the Al-Kuwair district of Nineveh, ending a rescue operation that lasted about five hours amidst widespread anticipation.
The child was transferred to a hospital in western Erbil in critical condition; according to a statement from the Erbil Health Directorate, which confirmed that she died upon arrival despite resuscitation and medical efforts, noting that her fall into the well caused serious complications that led to her death, while her body was referred to forensic medicine to determine the exact causes.
Hajar had fallen into a well approximately 20 meters deep and remained inside for hours, while civil defense teams in Nineveh confirmed that she was alive during the search operations. Specialized teams from Nineveh and Erbil participated in the efforts to reach her, after two previous attempts were unsuccessful due to the narrowness of the well and the difficulty of accessing the child's location.
After continuous attempts lasting five hours, the joint teams managed to pull her out and provided her with first aid before transferring her to the hospital, but her critical condition did not give her much time.
The incident recalled similar events that have occurred in the region; including the death of Algerian child Ayoub in 2026 after falling into a well, as well as the story of Moroccan child Rayan in 2022, which was followed by millions around the world during the rescue operations.
