The American sanctions on the Iranian aviation sector have entered a new phase, after Baghdad decided to suspend flights of Iranian airlines subject to American sanctions, in a move that reveals the widening scope of pressure on Tehran beyond its borders.
Two Iraqi government sources informed the French news agency, AFP, today (Monday), that Iraq will implement the ban on Iranian airlines covered by American sanctions starting from dawn tomorrow (Tuesday), in compliance with a decision by the U.S. Treasury Department.
U.S. Warning to Countries and Companies
The Iraqi decision comes after a stern American warning to service providers for Iranian airlines, as U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Piesen announced that Iranian airlines will face a work stoppage starting September 23, under the imposed sanctions.
Piesen stated that Iranian aircraft will not be able to obtain essential services at airports, including refueling, landing services, and ticket sales, warning entities providing these services of the risk of exclusion from the dollar-based financial system.
Baghdad Acts Before the Deadline
According to Iraqi sources, Baghdad decided to adhere to the American measures starting from dawn tomorrow, while one source warned that countries that do not implement the decision may face similar sanctions. A second Iraqi government source confirmed the validity of the decision.
This step comes at a time when American pressure on the Iranian aviation sector is escalating, as Washington has expanded sanctions to include companies and entities linked to this sector, in an attempt to restrict the ability of Iranian airlines to operate outside the country.
Strangling the Airspace
The repercussions of the sanctions are not limited to the airlines themselves, as American pressure targets the network of services that these companies need to operate their international flights, making it more difficult for Iranian aircraft to continue operating at certain airports.
In a simultaneous development, Mahan Air announced the suspension of its flights to Turkey, while Georgia has prohibited Iranian airlines from using its territory, as restrictions on Iranian aviation movements continue to expand.
Thus, American sanctions are transforming from measures targeting specific Iranian companies to broader pressure on the network of airports, services, and international partners associated with it, while Tehran awaits the repercussions of the upcoming American deadline on September 23.
