وأفادت هيئة الأرصاد الجوية اليابانية بأن مركز الزلزال وقع على عمق 10 كيلومترات، مشيرةً إلى أنه لم ترد أنباء فورية عن سقوط ضحايا أو وقوع أضرار مادية، أو تحذيرات من احتمال حدوث موجات مد عاتية (تسونامي) في أعقاب الزلزال.
وتشهد اليابان باستمرار زلازل بسبب وقوعها في منطقة «حزام النار» في المحيط الهادئ، التي تشهد نشاطًا زلزاليًا وبركانيًا مرتفعًا، وتمتد في جنوب شرق آسيا وصولًا إلى حوض المحيط الهادئ.
