Australian Robert Johnston was not a player in his youth; he started playing Australian football after he turned seventy. Today, at the age of 83, he still steps onto the field and participates with his team in South Australia.
Late Start
Johnston lives in the Riverland area and plays with the "Riverland Superdogs" in the "AFL Masters" league in South Australia, a competition for Australian football players aged 35 and over.
He had never played a team sport before, as he was used to walking and participating in individual activities until he discovered Australian football in his seventies, and his attachment to it became a part of his life.
Oldest Player
Johnston holds the title of the oldest player in the competition, and despite the age difference between him and many players, he still participates in training and matches.
He has set two rules for himself when entering the field: the first is to avoid falling, and the second is to be able to get the ball and kick it, while he admits that the other players are faster than him, but he still achieves what he describes as "small victories."
Kicks the Ball for About 30 Meters
Rob Romeo, the president of the "Riverland Superdogs" team, who has played alongside Johnston for nearly 10 years, said that the 83-year-old player is often one of the first to arrive at training and is still eager to improve his skills.
Despite his age, Johnston can kick the ball for nearly 30 meters.
New Appointment in Newcastle
Johnston is not thinking of stepping away from the field at the moment, as he is preparing to participate again in the "AFL Masters" championship in Newcastle, in the over 65 category, at the end of September.
He is also preparing for the competition in his own way, as he dyes his hair in the colors of South Australia; red, blue, and yellow, before the annual championship. The national championship this year will be held in Newcastle from September 26 to October 3.
According to Johnston, finding the "AFL Masters" competition was one of the best things that happened to him, as the sport has provided him with activity and social connections.
