The population of Egypt has exceeded 109.5 million people as of Saturday, after the country recorded an increase of one million people in just 262 days, indicating a continued population growth in the country.
The population clock affiliated with the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics announced that the population of Egypt has reached 109 million and 540 thousand and 965 people, compared to 108 million and 540 thousand and 965 people on January 1, 2026, adding one million people in less than nine months.
According to the agency's data, the population of Egypt reached 109 million people on May 9, before surpassing the 109.5 million mark during the current September, reflecting the continued increase in the population over a short period.
Historical comparisons reveal the significant population growth in Egypt over recent decades; the population rose from about 14.2 million in 1927 to 109.5 million currently, an increase of nearly 95 million people over nearly a century.
From 1927 to 1976, the population increased by about 22.5 million people, while the last fifty years saw a larger increase of about 72.4 million people, with the number rising from 36.6 million in 1976 to over 109 million in 2026.
The agency's data shows a clear upward trend in population numbers; after recording 48.3 million people in 1986, the number rose to 59.3 million in 1996, then to 72.8 million in 2006, and 94.8 million in 2017, before reaching 109 million in May 2026.
In the latest distribution of governorates, Cairo topped the list of the most populous governorates with about 10.5 million people, followed by Giza with 9.9 million, then Sharqia with 8.2 million, Dakahlia with 7.3 million, and Beheira with 7.2 million people.
Minya ranked sixth with about 6.7 million people, followed by Qalyubia with 6.4 million, Sohag with 6.1 million, then Alexandria with 5.7 million, and Gharbia with 5.6 million people.
Other governorates include Assiut with about 5.4 million people, Menoufia with 4.9 million, and Fayoum with 4.3 million, while the population ranged between 3.8 million in governorates like Kafr El Sheikh, Qena, and Beni Suef, and 120.7 thousand people in South Sinai.
These figures highlight the challenge that population growth poses for planning services, infrastructure, and the labor market, especially with a large portion of the population concentrated in the Nile Valley and Delta governorates, while the state is working on urban expansion and creating new communities to redistribute the population and reduce pressure on the most densely populated areas.
The Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics had previously shown in its population data the continued rise in the population, with varying figures depending on the measurement date and estimation method; the total population estimates for Egypt, according to the agency's data for 2024, reached about 105.9 million people.
The fact that the number of residents within Egypt has reached 109.5 million means that the increase recorded since the beginning of 2026 has reached one million people in less than nine months, at a time when the issue of population growth remains one of the main files related to economic and social development in the country.
