U.S. President Donald Trump defended the financial arrangements related to the celebrations that followed the wedding of his son Donald Trump Jr., after investigations revealed that Russian billionaire Omar Karimov, a close associate of Russian President Vladimir Putin, covered part of the celebration costs.
A report by the "ProPublica" organization this week revealed that Karimov, a prominent businessman in the betting sector and president of the International Boxing Association, funded the celebrations that followed the wedding ceremony of Donald Trump Jr. and his wife, Vanessa, in the Bahamas, which took place last May.

The costs included renting one of two private islands that hosted the celebrations over three days, for hundreds of thousands of dollars, along with a massive fireworks display.
In a joint statement, Trump Jr. and his wife said: “Our dear friend Omar generously hosted two wonderful nights of celebrations for us after our wedding; it was an incredibly generous wedding gift from a friend, and we were and still are very grateful for it.”
Trump: It’s allowed and money was returned
During a conversation with reporters in the Oval Office, the U.S. president defended the arrangements related to the event, stating for the first time that his son and daughter-in-law “paid him back” later.
Trump added: “This is perfectly allowed, and as I understand, they paid him back.”
The U.S. president described this type of arrangement as “very common,” adding: “I have hosted weddings for many people.”
Trump did not clarify, according to the report, the details of the amount he said the couple repaid or the timing of the repayment.
Who is Omar Karimov?
Omar Karimov is 43 years old and began his business career in Russia after growing up in the former Soviet state of Tajikistan, before building a vast network of relationships within the Russian business sector over the past three decades, benefiting from his close ties to the Kremlin.
In 2021, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree making Karimov's company, TSUPIS, the sole operator of all sports betting in Russia, effectively granting the company a monopoly in this sector.
The company's value is currently estimated at around $300 million, according to international estimates.
In 2024, after Russian authorities seized Rolf, the largest car dealership network in Russia, from its former owner Sergey Petrov, ownership of the company was transferred to Karimov at a discounted price, according to the report.
Close relationship with Putin
Karimov also serves as president of the International Boxing Association (IBA), the historical governing body of the sport of boxing, which was banned from the Olympic movement a year before the Paris Games due to allegations of corruption and match-fixing.
Since taking over the presidency of the association in 2020, Karimov has moved a large part of the organization's operations to Russia, and the state-owned Russian company Gazprom has become the main sponsor of the association.
Karimov frequently appears alongside Russian President Vladimir Putin at major events, including the opening ceremony of the International Boxing Center in Moscow in 2022.
The revelation of the funding for Trump Jr.'s wedding celebrations by a Russian businessman with close ties to the Kremlin comes at a time when the connections of Russian businessmen close to power with American political circles are attracting widespread interest, especially amid the complex relations between Washington and Moscow.
