Several beaches along the coast of Western Australia are continuing to be closed, including beaches in Perth, the state capital, at least until (Sunday), following a shark attack at a popular beach in the city (on Friday).
A swimmer was killed after being bitten by a shark at Sorrento Beach, about 20 kilometers from Perth's central business district, leading to the closure of beaches along 17 kilometers of the coast.
The state government stated, "Beaches in the Joondalup area of Perth will remain closed until at least midday (Sunday) (0400 GMT)."
It added in a warning, "Officers from the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development will continue to conduct land patrols."
The incident on (Friday) is the latest in a series of shark attacks in Australia, following a surfer in the same state being bitten by a shark in an attack (on Monday).
A surfer was attacked (on Monday) at a beach in the city of Geraldton, located about 400 kilometers north of Perth. Local media reported that he lost one of his feet and suffered serious injuries to his leg.
This follows the death of a 35-year-old man while spear fishing off the southern coast of the state in June, and the death of another 38-year-old man due to a shark attack near an island close to Perth in May.
