The European Union imposed, yesterday (Friday), import quotas and temporary minimum prices on electrical steel and its derived products, in a move aimed at protecting local producers from low-cost imports, especially those coming from Asia.
The new measures are set to take effect from September 25, until the European Commission completes an investigation it began last March regarding the protection of the electrical steel industry, known as "grain-oriented silicon steel."
The measures include quotas on grain-oriented silicon steel, along with sheets and molds made from it and used in electrical transformers.
The measures set the minimum price for steel between 2800 and 3400 euros per metric ton within the quotas, while the minimum price is 3500 euros per ton for quantities that exceed the specified quotas.
Grain-oriented silicon steel (GOES) is an advanced alloy of iron and silicon, manufactured in a way that aligns its internal crystals in a specific direction, enhancing its magnetic properties and making it suitable for use in electrical equipment, especially transformers.
