Between offices, screens, and busy roads, researchers are re-evaluating green spaces as more than just a destination for recreation, with an increasing number of studies linking exposure to nature with improved mental health indicators.
A scientific analysis showed that spending time in nature was associated with a reduction in symptoms of depression and anxiety, as well as improvements in mood and quality of life among adults experiencing symptoms related to mental health.
Another analysis of 113 studies found that spending more time in green spaces was linked to lower levels of stress and improvements in some indicators of mental well-being; however, researchers cautioned that the quality of evidence in this analysis was low, warranting caution against overinterpreting the results.
Nature can be incorporated into daily routines by walking in a park or sitting in a green space away from screens.
While nature does not serve as a substitute for psychological therapy when needed, it can be a supportive element for a more balanced lifestyle.
