A recent study has shown that more than half of Britons suffer from what is known as "tab overload syndrome"; a mental state in which an individual feels that their tasks and responsibilities are piling up at the same time, as if dozens of pages are open in their mind without stopping.
According to the study's results, 51% of participants feel daily that they have commitments that exceed their ability to keep up. Annika Bison, a technology company executive in Britain and Ireland, stated that the average Briton carries about six simultaneous tasks or reminders in their mind at any moment, and only gets nine minutes of calm after waking up before the list of daily commitments begins to dominate their thoughts.
Bison explained that mental pressure is more pronounced among Generation Z and Millennials; 57% of them confirmed that they suffer from this type of mental fatigue, compared to only 16% of the Baby Boomer generation. She pointed out that household tasks are the leading cause of stress at 51%, followed by financial matters at 48%, and then daily appointments at 42%. Work meetings also contribute to additional pressure for 26% of participants, while 20% suffer from fatigue due to recurring work commitments.
To cope with this mental congestion, 44% of participants rely on calendar alerts, while four out of ten write to-do lists by hand, and 35% use note-taking apps, while 27% set alarms to remind them of important tasks.
Bison emphasized that the problem lies not only in the length of the to-do list but also in keeping track of its details throughout the day, which keeps the mind in a constant state of operation similar to having multiple tabs open on a single screen.
