Prince Harry and his wife Meghan Markle have received a stern warning from royal experts about what they should do if they want to rebuild their fractured relationship with Prince William, amid assurances that any uncalculated step could permanently close the door to reconciliation.
In a series of comments from royal experts, commentator Richard Fitzwilliams emphasized that Harry and Meghan must stay completely out of the spotlight at this stage, asserting that "silence is the only option" if they are serious about repairing the relationship. He said, "Any new media appearance or provocative statements—whether interviews, books, or public complaints—will undermine what remains of the trust between the brothers."
Fitzwilliams pointed out that the couple's return to the UK has shifted attention away from other members of the royal family, considering that mutual friends in the Cotswolds could form a "potential bridge" for reconnecting William and Harry, if the latter and his wife commit to complete discretion.
Royal author Robert Jobson supported this view, warning that any new public comment about the royal family or the release of a second part of the memoirs or charity visits accompanied by media coverage would be interpreted as an attempt to appear in an official royal capacity, which could increase tensions.
In contrast, Simon Veigar, royal editor at Channel Five, believes the couple has made a good start, noting that nothing leaked from the meeting at Highgrove with the King and Queen in July, which he considered a "positive sign," but he questioned whether William is actually interested in reconciliation.
Sources close to the Prince of Wales indicate that feelings of anger and resentment are still very strong, and that William feels what happened is a "personal betrayal" that cannot be easily overcome. The BBC quoted a family friend saying that William is "very stubborn" and cannot turn the page quickly.
Despite this, Prince Harry had confirmed in a previous interview with the BBC that he wants reconciliation, stating, "There is no benefit in continuing to fight." However, royal author Valentine Low believes that William is not interested in pressures or calls for reconciliation, and that the matter is tied to what he considers "unforgivable mistakes."
With Harry's return to the UK, some experts see the opportunity as favorable for reopening the door to dialogue, and this may be timely with the upcoming 30th anniversary of Princess Diana's death next year, an occasion that holds significant symbolism for the brothers.
