اختارت ميلانيا ترمب البقاء في العاصمة واشنطن وعدم مرافقة زوجها (الرئيس الأمريكي دونالد ترمب) إلى مؤتمر الحزب الجمهوري الخاص بانتخابات التجديد النصفي، مفضّلة المشاركة في فعالية تتعلق بأعمال التجديد داخل البيت الأبيض.
ففي الوقت الذي كان فيه ترمب يلقي خطابًا مطوّلًا خلال التجمع الذي استضافته مدينة دالاس في ولاية تكساس يومي 9 و10 سبتمبر، كانت السيدة الأولى تشارك في (قمة المواقع الرئاسية) التي نظمتها الجمعية التاريخية للبيت الأبيض.
وخلال القمة التي امتدت ثلاثة أيام، ألقت ميلانيا كلمةً تحدثت فيها عن أهمية التصميم في تشكيل التجارب الإنسانية والحفاظ على الطابع التاريخي للمقار الرئاسية، مؤكدة أن التصميم «يتجاوز الجاذبية البصرية ليعكس الكرامة ويعزز الانتماء». كما استعرضت مشروع جناح التنس في البيت الأبيض، مشيرة إلى أن تفاصيله خضعت لدراسة دقيقة لضمان انسجامه مع الطابع الكلاسيكي الجديد للموقع.
وتأتي مشاركة ميلانيا في وقت يواجه فيه عدد من مشاريع التجديد التي يشرف عليها ترامب داخل البيت الأبيض انتقادات واسعة؛ من بينها مشروع قاعة الاحتفالات الجديدة وإعادة تصميم (حديقة الورود)، إضافة إلى إنشاء مهبط للمروحيات في الحديقة الجنوبية. وقد أثار هدم الجناح الشرقي تمهيدًا لبناء القاعة الجديدة جدلًا حول حجم الإنفاق وأولويات البناء في ظل الضغوط الاقتصادية التي يواجهها كثير من الأمريكيين.
ورغم غيابها عن مؤتمر الحزب الجمهوري، انضمت ميلانيا لاحقًا إلى ترامب في إحياء ذكرى هجمات 11 سبتمبر، في ظهور يعكس استمرار حضورها في المناسبات الرسمية الكبرى رغم اختلاف جدول أعمالها عن جدول زوجها في بعض المحطات السياسية.
Melania Trump chose to stay in the capital, Washington, and did not accompany her husband (U.S. President Donald Trump) to the Republican Party conference for the midterm elections, preferring to participate in an event related to renovation work inside the White House.
While Trump was delivering a lengthy speech during the rally hosted by the city of Dallas in Texas on September 9 and 10, the First Lady was participating in the (Presidential Sites Summit) organized by the White House Historical Association.
During the three-day summit, Melania delivered a speech in which she discussed the importance of design in shaping human experiences and preserving the historical character of presidential residences, emphasizing that design "goes beyond visual appeal to reflect dignity and enhance belonging." She also showcased the White House tennis pavilion project, noting that its details underwent careful study to ensure it harmonized with the site's neoclassical character.
Melania's participation comes at a time when several renovation projects overseen by Trump within the White House are facing widespread criticism; among them are the new event hall project and the redesign of the (Rose Garden), in addition to the establishment of a helicopter landing pad in the South Lawn. The demolition of the East Wing in preparation for the new hall has sparked debate over the level of spending and construction priorities amid the economic pressures faced by many Americans.
Despite her absence from the Republican Party conference, Melania later joined Trump in commemorating the September 11 attacks, in an appearance that reflects her continued presence at major official events, despite her agenda differing from her husband's at some political stops.
