At a time when weight loss drugs topped the list of modern dreams for achieving the perfect figure, a major scientific study shattered the euphoria of the pursuit of ideal weight by detonating a ticking bomb, revealing the hidden face that turns the dream of slimness into a nightmare leading to psychological darkness.
Researchers in South Korea, through a meticulous analysis of data from over 27,000 individuals, found a terrifying thread linking prescribed weight loss medications to severe mental relapses, as it became clear that users of these drugs were at the forefront of depression victims, with a staggering rate of 93% compared to others.
The medical shock was not limited to fleeting feelings of sadness; the published figures in the "Korean Journal of Family Medicine" revealed a frightening jump in rates of suicidal thoughts among users, reaching 168%!
Records disclosed that one in every 10 users was haunted by thoughts of ending their life, while 2.2% of them went so far as to actually plan the catastrophic step, a sign that bewildered health authorities who had treated these medications as safe solutions.
However, the most dangerous aspect of the research tracked what happens in the brain when stopping the use of the famous diabetes and weight loss drugs (GLP-1) and the return of lost weight:
- Regaining 5.9 to 10 kg: Increased the likelihood of suicidal thoughts by 65%
- Regaining more than 10 kg: The percentage skyrocketed to 267%
This rapid weight rebound causes a severe psychological relapse, where feelings of frustration and despair mix with the loss of money and effort, destabilizing the patient's mental stability and prompting them to seek urgent medical consultations.
In the face of this astonishment, the researchers behind the observational study (which covered data between 2013 and 2022) rushed to clarify a dividing line, emphasizing that the research indicates a "conclusive statistical correlation" but does not prove direct causality of the drug in destroying brain cells. Societal pressures, unrealistic expectations of fitness, or the shock of regaining weight may be the hidden drivers behind this phenomenon, making intensive laboratory research an urgent necessity that cannot be postponed to unravel this medical mystery before the trap widens.
