Davina Morley, whose name was associated in the 1970s with the then Prince of Wales, Prince Charles, passed away at the age of 75 after a brief battle with illness, closing the chapter on one of the romantic stories that preceded the king's marriage to Princess Diana.
According to the Daily Mail, Morley died at her home in the Cotswolds surrounded by her three children, after a life in which she chose to stay away from the limelight despite her name being linked to the royal family in her youth. Davina, formerly known as Davina Sheffield, hailed from a British family with deep roots, as her family is connected to a lineage dating back to the time of King Charles II, and she was also the granddaughter of prominent industrialist Lord McGowan.
During the 1970s, Davina emerged as one of the prominent young women in the high social circles frequented by Prince Charles, before their relationship developed into a romantic connection that garnered significant attention within royal circles. With Camilla stepping back from the scene after her marriage in 1973, their relationship grew closer, to the extent that some close to them described Davina as the closest to the prince's heart, and that she was a potential candidate to become his future wife.
Davina was notably accepted within the royal family, winning the admiration of Queen Elizabeth II and the Queen Mother, and she accompanied Charles on several official occasions, which fueled speculation about the possibility of her one day becoming Queen of Britain. However, her relationship with the prince ended abruptly after the press revealed a previous romantic involvement in her life, which was not in line with the strict standards governing the selection of a wife for the heir apparent at that time.
After that phase ended, Davina chose a life away from the spotlight, marrying businessman Jake Morley in 1981; the same year that saw Charles marry Princess Diana. She gave birth to three children before gradually stepping away from media attention and living a quiet life in the British countryside.
Her passing today brings attention back to an old chapter in King Charles's life and the relationships that preceded the major transformations in the royal family's trajectory. A memorial service is set to be held in her local church in Gloucestershire next November, attended by her family members and close friends.
