The Democratic Republic of the Congo has recorded a case of the Ebola virus in the Sud-Ubangi province in the northwest of the country, making it the seventh province affected by the outbreak and the first in the western part of the nation, in a development that raises concerns about the spread of the epidemic beyond its previous epicenter in the east of the country.
Former Congolese Health Minister and Member of Parliament Jean-Jacques Mbungani announced the death of a man in the Guaka area of Sud-Ubangi province, after confirming his infection with the Bundibugyo strain of the Ebola virus.
Mbungani explained that the man traveled over three weeks between several areas, having left the South Kivu province, where confirmed cases of the virus had previously been recorded, before traveling to Rwanda and Uganda, and then returning to the Democratic Republic of the Congo heading to Ituri province, which is one of the epicenters of the outbreak.
He added that the man continued his journey from the northeast of the country to the northwest, passing through the provinces of Tshuapa, Mongala, and Sud-Ubangi.
According to Mbungani, local authorities and doctors in Sud-Ubangi received a report about a patient suffering from a high fever and vomiting blood, before he passed away (on Tuesday). After his death, samples were taken from him and sent to the National Institute for Research for necessary testing, which confirmed his infection with the virus.
The recording of the case in Sud-Ubangi comes amid fears of the virus spreading to new areas, especially after the infected person traveled through several provinces and neighboring countries in a short period, increasing the challenges of containing the outbreak and limiting its spread.
