The "Curiosity" rover from NASA has detected unusual rock formations on the surface of Mars, characterized by wide and shallow pits scattered across the rocks, which has piqued the interest of the scientific team that has begun studying their structure and the processes that may have contributed to their formation.
NASA explained that the two work areas explored by "Curiosity" contained pits that differ from similar formations previously observed by the rover; these pits appeared wider and shallower, and were not accompanied by clear objects that could explain their presence.
A pit with a diameter of one centimeter
The "MAHLI" microscopic imaging camera captured one of these pits, which has a diameter of about one centimeter (0.39 inches). The image was taken on August 19, 2026, during the Martian day "4989" of the Mars Science Laboratory mission.
A possible explanation... but the picture is not complete
NASA indicates that pits in rocks are not an unknown phenomenon, as they can form when resistant nodules or pebbles within the rock hollow out and leave behind a void. However, the formations observed by "Curiosity" this time appeared different due to their width and shallowness and the absence of clear remnants inside them.
3D images to understand the formations
The "Curiosity" team used the "MAHLI" and "Mastcam" cameras to capture 3D images and overlapping image sets of the pits, which can be converted into digital elevation models, helping scientists study their structure and understand the processes that affected these rocks.
“A geological mystery in Mars rocks”
These formations are found within the rocks that "Curiosity" is exploring in the geological layers of Mount Sharp, inside Gale Crater, where the rover continues to study changes in the texture, structure, and composition of the rocks to understand Mars' geological history.
"Curiosity" has been continuing its mission on the surface of Mars since its landing in August 2012, while the images and data it collects allow specialists to study the geological processes that have shaped the surface of the red planet throughout its history.
