Uber, in collaboration with the British artificial intelligence company Wayve, has launched its first publicly available self-driving rides in the United Kingdom, specifically in the capital, London, in a move that paves the way for expanding the use of self-driving vehicles in transportation services.
The service began on September 3rd, with a limited number of electric Ford Mustang Mach-E vehicles equipped with an AI-powered driving system from Wayve.
Uber customers using UberX, Uber Electric, and Uber Comfort can be assigned one of the self-driving vehicles at no additional charge.
Despite relying on the self-driving system, the service currently operates under human supervision, as each vehicle has a licensed and trained driver from Transport for London inside to monitor the trip and intervene or take over driving when necessary.
Uber clarified that the passenger will be given the option to accept the self-driving ride or switch to a driver-driven car before the vehicle arrives. Users in London can also activate the self-driving vehicle option in the app settings to increase their chances of being assigned one of these rides.
The company noted that over 140,000 people in London have expressed interest in the service.
The self-driving vehicles allow for travel throughout various parts of the British capital, excluding airports, marking the first availability of self-driving rides to the public in the United Kingdom.
