في إجازة أحلام كان يُفترض أن تكون الملاذ المثالي للاسترخاء داخل فيلا فاخرة يُقدر إيجارها الأسبوعي بـ 2000 جنيه إسترليني، تحول الهدوء في مدينة «كوليرا» الإسبانية إلى فاجعة سوداء صدمت العاصمة البريطانية لندن.
الضحيتان هما الخبير التكنولوجي باتريك توبين (48 عاماً) وزوجته توماسينا (51 عاماً) الخبيرة المرموقة في قطاع الفنادق الفاخرة. استأجر الزوجان فيلا «لونا» الأنيقة جنوب مقاطعة فالنسيا لقضاء وقت عائلي دافئ، دون أن يعلما أن المياه الساخنة التي قاما باللجوء إليها للاستجمام تخفي قوة سحب مرعبة تسلب الأرواح في صمت!
انكشفت الكارثة عند الساعة الخامسة مساءً، حين توجه طفلا الزوجين (14 و16 عاماً) للبحث عن والديهما، ليصطدما بمشهد حبس أنفاسهما وشل حركتهما، جثتان هادئتان تحت مياه كدرة تفوح منها رائحة كيميائية نفاذة، مع وجود آثار خدوش ودماء على أطراف الحوض.
وأزالت التحقيقات الأولية للشرطة الإسبانية الغموض، فالوفاة لم تكن بسبب جناية أو صعق كهربائي، بل نتجت عن ظاهرة علمية مرعبة تُعرف بـ«الاحتجاز بالشفط»!
وتبين أن خللاً ميكانيكياً مفاجئاً في مضخات «الجاكوزي» ولّد قوة هيدروليكية هائلة وقاتلة، شلت حركة أحدهما وسحبته بقوة إلى القاع لمنع التنفس، في حين دفع الحب والواجب الآخر للدخول في محاولة إنقاذ يائسة، ليلقى المصير القاسي نفسه ويغرق بجواره.
