ضرب زلزال بلغت قوته 6.2 درجة جزر ساندويتش الجنوبية في جنوب المحيط الأطلسي، وهي منطقة تابعة لأقاليم ما وراء البحار البريطانية.
وذكرت هيئة المسح الجيولوجي الأمريكية أن الهزة وقعت على عمق وصل إلى 125.9 كيلومتر، في نطاق معروف بنشاطه الزلزالي والبركاني المتكرر نتيجة وقوعه عند التقاء الصفائح التكتونية بين الصفيحة الأمريكية الجنوبية والصفيحة القطبية الجنوبية.
وتُعد الجزر من أكثر المناطق النائية في العالم، ولا تضم تجمعات سكانية، ما يجعل تأثير الهزات محدودًا رغم قوتها. وكانت المنطقة قد شهدت في أغسطس 2021 زلزالًا تجاوزت قوته ثماني درجات دون تسجيل خسائر بشرية أو مادية، نظرًا لطبيعتها الجغرافية المعزولة.
A 6.2 magnitude earthquake struck the South Sandwich Islands in the South Atlantic Ocean, an area belonging to the British Overseas Territories.
The U.S. Geological Survey reported that the tremor occurred at a depth of 125.9 kilometers, in a region known for its repeated seismic and volcanic activity due to its location at the convergence of the tectonic plates between the South American plate and the Antarctic plate.
The islands are considered one of the most remote areas in the world and do not have any population centers, which limits the impact of the tremors despite their strength. The region experienced an earthquake in August 2021 that exceeded a magnitude of eight without any recorded human or material losses, due to its isolated geographical nature.
