حدثت شركة «قوقل» تطبيق الخرائط التابع لها، ليظهر اسم بحيرة أونتاريو للمستخدمين داخل الولايات المتحدة باسم «بحيرة أمريكا»، تنفيذاً لأمر أصدره الرئيس الأمريكي دونالد ترمب أخيراً بتغيير اسم البحيرة.
حرب تجارية متصاعدة
ويأتي تحديث خرائط «قوقل» بعد أيام من قرار ترمب، في ظل تصاعد الحرب التجارية مع كندا، التي أدت إلى فرض البلدين رسوماً جمركية إضافية بمليارات الدولارات على سلع متبادلة.
يُعيد القرار إلى الأذهان ما قامت به «قوقل» عام 2025، عقب إصدار ترمب أمراً بإعادة تسمية خليج المكسيك إلى «خليج أمريكا».
سياسة الأسماء الجغرافية
وقالت «قوقل»، في منشور على مدونتها (السبت)، إن القرار يستند إلى سياستها المعتمدة في استخدام الأسماء المحددة من نظام معلومات الأسماء الجغرافية الأمريكي «GNIS».
وأوضحت الشركة أن مستخدمي الخرائط في الولايات المتحدة سيشاهدون اسم «بحيرة أمريكا»، فيما سيستمر المستخدمون في كندا في رؤية اسم «بحيرة أونتاريو»، بينما سيظهر الاسمان معاً للمستخدمين خارج الولايات المتحدة وكندا.
وأضافت أن هذه التحديثات تأتي تطبيقاً لسياساتها المعمول بها منذ فترة طويلة بشأن المسطحات المائية التي تختلف تسمياتها من دولة إلى أخرى، مشيرة إلى أن تطبيق التحديث بدأ بالفعل.
رد كندي ساخر
قوبل قرار ترمب، الصادر (الخميس)، بإعادة تسمية البحيرة بالسخرية واللامبالاة في كل من كندا والولايات المتحدة.
ورد رئيس وزراء أونتاريو دوغ فورد، (السبت)، على القرار برسالة كبيرة على الشاطئ الكندي جاء فيها: «بحيرة أونتاريو.. الآن وإلى الأبد».
ولم يصدر تعليق فوري من البيت الأبيض أو مكتب رئيس الوزراء الكندي مارك كارني أو مكتب فورد بشأن قرار «قوقل».
Google has updated its mapping application to show the name of Lake Ontario to users within the United States as "Lake America," in accordance with an order issued by President Donald Trump recently to change the name of the lake.
Escalating Trade War
The Google Maps update comes just days after Trump's decision, amid an escalating trade war with Canada, which has led both countries to impose additional tariffs worth billions of dollars on exchanged goods.
The decision recalls what Google did in 2025, following Trump's order to rename the Gulf of Mexico to "Gulf of America."
Geographical Naming Policy
Google stated in a post on its blog (Saturday) that the decision is based on its established policy of using names specified by the U.S. Geographic Names Information System (GNIS).
The company explained that map users in the United States will see the name "Lake America," while users in Canada will continue to see the name "Lake Ontario," whereas both names will appear together for users outside the United States and Canada.
It added that these updates are in line with its long-standing policies regarding bodies of water that have different names from one country to another, noting that the implementation of the update has already begun.
Canadian Sarcastic Response
Trump's decision, issued (Thursday) to rename the lake, was met with sarcasm and indifference in both Canada and the United States.
Ontario Premier Doug Ford responded to the decision (Saturday) with a large message on the Canadian shore that read: "Lake Ontario... now and forever."
No immediate comment was issued from the White House or the office of Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney or Ford's office regarding Google's decision.
