The Egyptian Ministry of Interior has launched a new preemptive strike against criminal elements involved in drug trafficking and smuggling, after security forces managed to apprehend a highly dangerous gang in possession of massive quantities of drugs and firearms, estimated to be worth around three billion Egyptian pounds, before a portion of the seized items could be smuggled to another country.
The Ministry of Interior clarified, in a statement today (Thursday), that information and investigations by the Anti-Narcotics and Unlicensed Weapons and Ammunition Sector, in coordination with the relevant ministry agencies, revealed that a gang was bringing in large quantities of the narcotic Captagon and various other drugs, in preparation for trading and smuggling some quantities abroad.
The ministry added that after legal procedures were formalized and necessary ambushes were set up, the gang members were targeted and apprehended in the Red Sea and Ismailia governorates.
The security operation resulted in the seizure of three million Captagon pills, 100 kilograms of hydro drug, and 50 kilograms of hashish, in addition to three firearms that were in the possession of the suspects.
The Ministry of Interior confirmed that the financial value of the seized items in the targeted country is estimated at around three billion pounds, noting that necessary legal measures have been taken against the suspects.
Drug trafficking is considered a serious crime under Egyptian law, as the Narcotics Control Law No. 182 of 1960 and its amendments stipulate severe penalties for anyone proven to be involved in bringing, exporting, producing, possessing, or holding narcotic substances for the purpose of trafficking.
The penalty for drug trafficking, bringing, or exporting can reach hard labor or life imprisonment, in addition to substantial financial fines, depending on the circumstances of the incident, the type and quantity of the drug, and the role of the accused in it.
In some cases specified by law, the penalty may extend to the death penalty; including crimes related to bringing or exporting drugs, managing or financing trafficking activities, or committing the crime under aggravated circumstances as defined by law.
Penalties also include the confiscation of narcotic substances, money, and tools used in committing the crime, along with legal actions against the suspects as determined by the relevant investigative and judicial authorities.
