Meta is facing a new obstacle in its efforts to make its smart glasses a part of daily life, as British restaurants and theaters have begun to ban their use within their premises due to privacy concerns and the potential for recording individuals without their knowledge.
Meta had launched its new line of smart glasses, which were promoted by global star Kylie Jenner, in an attempt to make them a familiar product akin to tablets and smartwatches, benefiting from their design that resembles traditional glasses with the addition of small cameras and artificial intelligence technologies.
However, several well-known venues in Britain have taken a different stance, announcing a ban on wearing these glasses inside their facilities, fearing they could be used to record videos of visitors or staff without prior consent.
According to The Guardian, Jeremy King, one of London's prominent restaurant owners and the owner of several famous destinations, stated that guests should not wear glasses equipped with recording features inside his restaurants. He added: "I will not knowingly allow any violation of guests' privacy, except for what our eyes, which we were born with, capture."
A club chain also confirmed that it does not allow photography inside its venues, and that smart glasses are not an exception to this rule. Other entities have joined in refusing the use of glasses within their branches, considering that these glasses enable a form of "covert surveillance."
The restrictions are not limited to restaurants and clubs, as a group managing several British theaters announced that photography would not be permitted during performances, emphasizing that anyone using glasses to record will be asked to remove them.
Concerns about recording without others' knowledge
Meta's new glasses resemble regular glasses in appearance, but they contain small built-in cameras, and the company claims that their purpose is to help users stay "in the moment" rather than being constantly distracted by smartphones.
However, the presence of a camera mounted on the face has raised widespread concerns about the possibility of using it to record people without their knowledge, and then sharing those clips on social media platforms.
Meta points out that there is a small light indicator that flashes when the camera is activated, confirming that it cannot be disabled, and that disabling this indicator will automatically turn off the camera.
Despite this, there have been complaints from users who reported being recorded without consent, including cases where recorded clips were used in abusive or extortionate contexts.
Instagram stated that it is working to remove content that exploits individuals or violates their privacy, and the platform's head, Adam Mosseri, confirmed that clips that involve harassing others or recording them without consent will be deleted.
Sales expand despite the controversy
Meta is seeking to enhance the spread of smart glasses by collaborating with influencers and celebrities, providing free copies to some influential figures on social media for promotion. According to the company, sales of these devices tripled over the past year, with more than 7 million units sold worldwide.
Despite objections in some places, supporters of the glasses believe they could offer practical uses, such as making hands-free calls, listening to music, instant translation, and recording everyday moments.
For its part, Meta confirmed that it designed privacy features into the glasses from the start, noting that the recording light is an essential part of the device, and that the camera stops working if it is covered or tampered with.
The biggest challenge for Meta remains convincing the public that smart glasses are not a surveillance tool, but rather a new technological means for daily use, at a time when global concerns about privacy boundaries are increasing in the age of artificial intelligence and wearable devices.
