أعلنت السلطات الإندونيسية اليوم (الأحد) مقتل 5 أشخاص وفقدان 41 آخرين إثر اندلاع حريق على متن عبّارة ركاب قبالة سواحل جزيرة مادورا، فيما تواصل فرق البحث والإنقاذ عملياتها للعثور على المفقودين وسط مخاوف من ارتفاع حصيلة الضحايا.
وبحسب بيان السلطات، اندلع الحريق صباح الأحد على متن سفينة الركاب «موتيارا سانتوسا 2» أثناء إبحارها من مدينة سورابايا، عاصمة مقاطعة جاوة الشرقية، إلى مدينة ماكاسار في مقاطعة سولاويزي الجنوبية، ما أدى إلى تصاعد أعمدة كثيفة من الدخان من السفينة وإطلاق عملية إنقاذ واسعة.
وأوضحت السلطات أن العبّارة كانت تقل 271 شخصًا بين ركاب وأفراد الطاقم، وتمكنت فرق الإنقاذ من إجلاء 225 منهم حتى ظهر الأحد، بينما تأكدت وفاة 5 أشخاص، ولا يزال 41 آخرون في عداد المفقودين، في حين تتواصل عمليات التمشيط في المنطقة البحرية المحيطة بموقع الحادثة.
ولم تكشف السلطات حتى الآن عن أسباب اندلاع الحريق، مؤكدة أن التحقيقات لا تزال جارية لتحديد ملابساته، بالتزامن مع استمرار جهود فرق الطوارئ لإنقاذ أي ناجين محتملين.
وتقع جزيرة مادورا قبالة الساحل الشمالي الشرقي لجزيرة جاوة، وتُعد المنطقة من الممرات البحرية النشطة التي تربط عددًا من الجزر الإندونيسية، حيث تعتمد عليها حركة نقل الركاب والبضائع بشكل يومي.
وتشهد إندونيسيا، وهي أكبر أرخبيل في العالم ويضم أكثر من 17 ألف جزيرة، حوادث بحرية متكررة بسبب الاعتماد الكبير على النقل البحري، إضافة إلى عوامل مثل تقلبات الأحوال الجوية، والاكتظاظ في بعض الرحلات، وضعف معايير السلامة في بعض السفن.
وخلال السنوات الماضية، تعرضت البلاد لسلسلة من حوادث غرق وحرائق العبارات، ما دفع السلطات إلى تشديد إجراءات التفتيش والسلامة، إلا أن الحوادث لا تزال تتكرر بين الحين والآخر، خصوصًا في خطوط الملاحة التي تربط الجزر الرئيسية.
The Indonesian authorities announced today (Sunday) the death of 5 people and the disappearance of 41 others following a fire that broke out on a passenger ferry off the coast of Madura Island, while search and rescue teams continue their operations to find the missing amid fears of a rising death toll.
According to a statement from the authorities, the fire broke out on Sunday morning aboard the passenger ship "Mutiara Santosa 2" while it was sailing from Surabaya, the capital of East Java province, to Makassar in South Sulawesi province, resulting in thick columns of smoke rising from the ship and triggering a large-scale rescue operation.
The authorities clarified that the ferry was carrying 271 people, including passengers and crew members, and rescue teams managed to evacuate 225 of them by Sunday afternoon, while the death of 5 people has been confirmed, and 41 others are still missing, as search operations continue in the maritime area surrounding the incident site.
The authorities have not yet revealed the causes of the fire, confirming that investigations are still ongoing to determine the circumstances, alongside the continued efforts of emergency teams to rescue any potential survivors.
Madura Island is located off the northeastern coast of Java Island and is considered one of the active maritime corridors connecting several Indonesian islands, as it is relied upon for the daily transport of passengers and goods.
Indonesia, the largest archipelago in the world with over 17,000 islands, experiences recurrent maritime accidents due to its heavy reliance on maritime transport, in addition to factors such as weather fluctuations, overcrowding on some trips, and weak safety standards on certain vessels.
In recent years, the country has faced a series of sinking incidents and ferry fires, prompting authorities to tighten inspection and safety measures, yet accidents continue to occur from time to time, especially on the shipping routes connecting the main islands.
