The World Health Organization has warned that the dangers of wildfires are not limited to their outbreak locations, as smoke can travel across countries and continents, leading to deteriorating air quality and threatening the health of populations in distant areas.
It explained that the smoke from fires contains gases and fine particles capable of penetrating the lungs and bloodstream, which can cause coughing, irritation of the eyes and throat, headaches, and shortness of breath, and increase the risks of complications for those suffering from asthma and heart and lung diseases.
It pointed out that children, the elderly, pregnant women, people with disabilities, and those working in emergency and open areas are more vulnerable to the effects, noting that climate change, rising temperatures, and drought contribute to the increased frequency and spread of wildfires.
The organization urged monitoring air quality warnings, reducing outdoor activities when smoke is present, maintaining air purity inside homes, and seeking medical care when symptoms related to inhalation appear.
