في لحظات قليلة، تحولت زيارة عائلية عادية إلى معركة شرسة بين الحياة والموت. لم يكن كريس هاوارث يتوقع أن تنتهي رحلته بلدغتين خاطفتين من أفعى جرس سامة، أو أن نجاته من الموت ستفتح أمامه أزمة جديدة لا تقل قسوة، بعدما وجد نفسه أمام فاتورة علاج تجاوزت 1.3 مليون دولار.
نجا كريس هاوارث، وهو أب لثلاثة أطفال من ولاية أيداهو الأمريكية، بأعجوبة بعد تعرضه للدغتين متتاليتين من أفعى الجرس أثناء زيارة عائلية في ولاية كاليفورنيا، ما استدعى تلقيه 54 جرعة من المصل المضاد للسموم، في واحدة من أكثر الحالات التي واجهها الأطباء تعقيداً.
لدغتان قلبتا حياته
بدأت الواقعة في حديقة منزل والدَي هاوارث بمدينة أوروفيل، حيث كان يستعد لمغادرة المنزل والعودة إلى أيداهو بعد زيارة استمرت أربعة أيام. وبينما كان يسير في الحديقة، ظن أنه اصطدم بنبتة برية، قبل أن يكتشف أن أفعى جرس باغتته ولدغته مرتين في ساقه خلال ثوانٍ.
وسرعان ما بدأت حالته الصحية في التدهور بشكل متسارع، إذ فقد الإحساس بلسانه، وتورمت غدده الليمفاوية بصورة كبيرة، كما تعرضت رئتاه لمضاعفات خطيرة كادت تودي بحياته.
وبعد أيام، ازدادت حالته تعقيداً مع إصابته بمتلازمة التخثر المنتشر داخل الأوعية الدموية، وهي حالة طبية خطيرة تتسبب في تكوّن جلطات غير طبيعية في أنحاء مختلفة من الجسم.
سباق لإنقاذ حياته
في محاولة يائسة لإنقاذه، أعطى الأطباء في مستشفى أوروفيل هاوارث 54 جرعة من المصل المضاد للسموم، وهي كمية استثنائية استنزفت مخزون المستشفى بالكامل.
ومع استمرار تدهور حالته، نُقل بطائرة إسعاف إلى مركز ستانفورد الطبي، حيث اضطر الفريق الطبي إلى تغيير نوع المصل المستخدم بالكامل من أجل السيطرة على حالته واستقرار علاماته الحيوية.
وبعد 12 يوماً قضاها في وحدة العناية المركزة، تمكن هاوارث أخيراً من مغادرة المستشفى والعودة إلى منزله في ولاية أيداهو برفقة زوجته جيني وأطفالهما الثلاثة.
تعافٍ غير مكتمل
وقالت زوجته إن هاوارث استعاد نحو 80% من صحته، لكنه لا يزال يعاني من آلام وتورم مستمرين في ساقه، يزدادان مع أي مجهود بدني، إضافة إلى إرهاق مزمن يحد من نشاطه اليومي.
وأضافت أن الليلة التي أصيب فيها بمتلازمة التخثر كانت الأكثر رعباً في حياة الأسرة، مؤكدة أن التجربة غيّرت نظرتهم للحياة، وجعلتهم أكثر تقديراً لكل لحظة يقضونها معاً.
نجا من السم.. واصطدم بفاتورة مليونية
ولم تتوقف معاناة الأسرة عند الأزمة الصحية، إذ بلغت تكلفة العلاج في المستشفيين نحو 1.3 مليون دولار قبل احتساب تغطية التأمين الصحي.
ووصلت تكلفة الجرعة الواحدة من المصل المضاد للسموم إلى نحو 13 ألف دولار، فيما بلغت تكلفة الليلة الواحدة داخل وحدة العناية المركزة في مركز ستانفورد الطبي 61 ألف دولار.
ورغم امتلاك هاوارث تأميناً صحياً، فإن الأسرة لا تزال تجهل قيمة المبلغ الذي ستتحمل دفعه بعد احتساب التغطية التأمينية.
وتزامنت هذه الأزمة مع توقف هاوارث عن العمل منذ أواخر مايو الماضي دون راتب، بعدما استنفد كامل إجازاته المرضية والسنوية إثر خضوعه لجراحة في يناير، ما دفع العائلة إلى إطلاق حملة تبرعات عبر منصة «جو فند مي» لتغطية نفقات العلاج والدخل المفقود.
وتمكنت الحملة حتى الآن من جمع أكثر من 10,200 دولار، من أصل هدف يبلغ 12 ألف دولار، بينما تواصل الأسرة مواجهة تبعات واحدة من أصعب التجارب التي مرت بها.

Two Bites That Changed His Life
The incident began in the backyard of Haworth's parents' home in Oroville, where he was preparing to leave and return to Idaho after a four-day visit. While walking in the yard, he thought he had brushed against a wild plant, only to discover that a rattlesnake had ambushed him and bitten him twice on the leg within seconds.
His health condition quickly began to deteriorate, as he lost feeling in his tongue, and his lymph nodes swelled significantly, while his lungs suffered serious complications that nearly cost him his life.
Days later, his condition became more complicated with the onset of disseminated intravascular coagulation, a serious medical condition that causes abnormal blood clots to form in various parts of the body.
A Race to Save His Life
In a desperate attempt to save him, doctors at Oroville Hospital administered 54 doses of antivenom to Haworth, an extraordinary amount that depleted the hospital's entire supply.
As his condition continued to worsen, he was airlifted to Stanford Medical Center, where the medical team had to completely change the type of antivenom used in order to stabilize his condition and vital signs.
After 12 days in the intensive care unit, Haworth finally managed to leave the hospital and return home to Idaho with his wife Jenny and their three children.
Incomplete Recovery
His wife stated that Haworth has regained about 80% of his health, but he still suffers from ongoing pain and swelling in his leg, which worsens with any physical exertion, in addition to chronic fatigue that limits his daily activities.
She added that the night he developed the coagulation syndrome was the most terrifying in the family's life, emphasizing that the experience changed their outlook on life and made them more appreciative of every moment they spend together.
Survived the Venom... and Faced a Million-Dollar Bill
The family's suffering did not stop at the health crisis, as the cost of treatment in both hospitals reached about $1.3 million before accounting for health insurance coverage.
The cost of a single dose of antivenom reached about $13,000, while the cost of one night in the intensive care unit at Stanford Medical Center was $61,000.
Despite Haworth having health insurance, the family still does not know the amount they will have to pay after accounting for the insurance coverage.
This crisis coincided with Haworth being out of work since late May without pay, after exhausting all his sick and vacation leave following surgery in January, prompting the family to launch a fundraising campaign on the "GoFundMe" platform to cover medical expenses and lost income.
The campaign has so far managed to raise over $10,200 of a $12,000 goal, while the family continues to face the aftermath of one of the toughest experiences they have gone through.
