Marius Borg Høiby (29 years old), the son of Norway's Crown Princess Mette-Marit, has left prison following a surprising court decision and will be placed under house arrest with an "electronic bracelet" while awaiting the final word on his appeal against a ruling issued against him in sexual assault cases that have captured the attention of the Norwegian public.
According to what was revealed by the Norwegian newspaper VG, Høiby will not serve his detention in a traditional prison but will move to a private residence located very close to his mother’s home and her husband, Crown Prince Haakon, in the luxurious area of "Asker," under strict electronic monitoring for a period of 4 weeks, which can be renewed.
The details of the crisis date back to last June when the court convicted Høiby of committing several horrific crimes, including two counts of rape, resulting in a prison sentence of 4 years, in addition to imposing a restraining order preventing him from approaching one of the victims for two years.
Despite the court acknowledging the "real possibility of him committing new crimes," it agreed to his request to complete his detention temporarily outside of actual prison and under home electronic monitoring, given that he has filed an appeal for which a final ruling has not yet been issued.
The case is particularly sensitive as the accused is the eldest son of Crown Princess Mette-Marit from a previous relationship before her famous marriage to Crown Prince Haakon in 2001. Although Høiby does not hold any official royal title and is not in the line of succession to the Norwegian throne, the association of his name with the palace has made the case a hot topic for global media.
In the first official reaction to this sensitive development, the communications officer at the royal palace stated that the Crown Prince and his wife, Princess Mette-Marit, are determined to provide all the support and assistance to their son Marius during this difficult phase of his life.
This release and the overwhelming media coverage come at a very critical and challenging time for the royal family in Norway, as the palace announced just a few days ago that Princess Mette-Marit had left the hospital after undergoing a complex "lung transplant" surgery following her long struggle with chronic pulmonary fibrosis, leaving the princess caught between the hammer of facing a serious illness and the anvil of her eldest son's legal troubles.
