A return trip from a wedding turned into a bloody tragedy that shook the Giza Governorate, after 7 people lost their lives and another was injured in an incident where a private car fell into the Marioutiya Canal in the Badrashein area on Sunday evening. This incident recalled a similar tragedy that occurred at the same site less than two weeks ago, which resulted in the death of an entire family.

The road between the villages of Abu Sir and Al-Aziziyah witnessed a state of alert following the receipt of a report by the operations room indicating that a private car had overturned and fallen into the waters of the Marioutiya Canal.

Immediately, security forces, river rescue teams, and civil protection units, supported by several ambulances, moved to the scene of the incident.

According to preliminary investigations, the victims were on their way back to the Saf city after attending the wedding of a relative, as they were traveling in a private car as part of a convoy accompanying the wedding procession.

While the car was moving, the front tire suddenly exploded, causing the driver to lose control of the steering wheel, leading the vehicle to veer off the road and fall into the canal's waters.

Investigations confirmed that the cars following the ill-fated vehicle witnessed the moment it veered off and fell into the water, and the occupants attempted to intervene and rescue the passengers. However, the car sank within a few minutes, complicating the rescue efforts for those inside.

The river rescue teams deployed specialized units supported by three boats to search and comb the waterway, while several locals participated in the rescue and retrieval operations.

The forces managed to extract the car and recover the bodies of the victims, while one of the occupants was rescued and taken to the hospital for necessary treatment.

The incident resulted in the deaths of: Yahya Helmy Said Eid (54 years old), Mahmoud Ismail Mahmoud Mohamed (47 years old), Mohamed Said Mahmoud Mohamed (36 years old), Said Mohamed Said Mahmoud (6 years old), Malik Yahya Helmy Said (10 years old), and two bodies that could not be identified at the time of reporting.

The bodies were transferred to the morgue of Badrashein Hospital under the supervision of the investigative authorities, while the relevant agencies continued their efforts to identify the victims and complete the investigations.

The incident takes on even more tragic dimensions as it occurred near the same site where another private car fell into the Marioutiya Canal at the beginning of June, resulting in the deaths of 7 people from one family, including children, in an incident that sparked widespread sadness and sympathy on social media.

Initial examinations of both incidents indicate similarities in the circumstances, as the loss of control over the steering wheel and the vehicle veering off the road led to its fall into the water, which has renewed calls for the need to enhance traffic safety measures along the road adjacent to the canal.

The recurrence of accidents within a short period has raised questions about the adequacy of protective barriers and safety measures on the sides of the road, especially in areas that run alongside waterways, amid demands from locals for urgent intervention to prevent the recurrence of such tragic incidents.

The security forces imposed a security cordon around the site of the incident to facilitate rescue and examination operations, while a report was filed regarding the incident, and the public prosecution was notified to initiate investigations to determine the final causes of the incident and ensure there was no criminal suspicion.
