هزت ولاية واشنطن شمال غرب الولايات المتحدة حادثة مأساوية، إثر تسرب مواد كيميائية خطرة داخل مصنع لإعادة تدوير وصناعة الورق، مما أسفر عن وقوع وفيات وإصابات بالغة الخطورة، بحسب ما أكدته السلطات المحلية.
ووفقاً لبيان مشترك صدر عن إدارة إطفاء «لونغفيو» وشركة «نيبون دايناويف باكيدجينغ» المشغّلة للمصنع، فإن الكارثة نتجت عن انفجار خزان ضخم يحتوي على ما يُعرف بـ *«المحلول الأبيض»* (White Liquor). وتتكون هذه المادة الكيميائية الحارقة من خليط من:
* هيدروكسيد الصوديوم
* كبريتيد الصوديوم
ويعد "المحلول الأبيض* مادة أساسية تدخل في المراحل الأولى لإنتاج الورق، حيث تُستخدم كيميائياً لتكسير رقائق الخشب وتحويلها إلى لب الورق.
رغم تأكيد السلطات لوقوع وفيات وإصابات حرجة متعددة نتيجة الحادثة، إلا أنها فرضت تكتماً على الأعداد الدقيقة للضحايا والمفقودين حتى الآن. وفي المقابل، طمأنت الأجهزة الأمنية السكان المحليين بعدم وجود خطر بيئي أو صحي مباشر يهدد المجمعات السكنية المحيطة بالمصنع.
من جهتها، نقلت صحيفة *«سياتل تايمز»* عن فرق الإطفاء حصيلة أولية تشير إلى إصابة عشرة أشخاص على الأقل بجروح بليغة، من بينهم تسعة من عمال المصنع وعنصر من رجال الإنقاذ.
وتعتبر منشأة «نيبون دايناويف» التابعة لمجموعة «نيبون بيبر» اليابانية العملاقة، أحد أعمدة صناعة التغليف عالمياً؛ حيث تشير بياناتها الرسمية إلى إنتاج نحو 8 مليارات عبوة تغليف سنوياً، تُلبي بها احتياجات أسواق ضخمة في أمريكا الشمالية وآسيا ومختلف دول العالم.
The state of Washington in the northwest United States was shaken by a tragic incident, following the leakage of hazardous chemicals inside a paper recycling and manufacturing plant, resulting in fatalities and serious injuries, as confirmed by local authorities.
According to a joint statement issued by the Longview Fire Department and the Nippon Dynawave Packaging company operating the plant, the disaster resulted from the explosion of a massive tank containing what is known as *“White Liquor”*. This caustic chemical is composed of a mixture of:
* Sodium hydroxide
* Sodium sulfide
The *“White Liquor”* is a key substance used in the early stages of paper production, where it is chemically used to break down wood chips and convert them into pulp.
Despite authorities confirming multiple fatalities and critical injuries as a result of the incident, they have imposed a gag order on the exact numbers of victims and missing persons so far. In contrast, security agencies reassured local residents that there is no immediate environmental or health threat to the residential areas surrounding the plant.
For its part, the *Seattle Times* reported from firefighting teams an initial toll indicating that at least ten people were severely injured, including nine plant workers and one rescue personnel.
