The story began 90 nautical miles off the coast of Cartagena, Colombia, where the radar of the patrol vessel "Tahuma" (270 feet long) detected the suspicious movements of the three boats simultaneously. Faced with this logistical challenge, the ship transformed into a mini command center; from its deck, two fast boats were launched, alongside an attack helicopter taking off to cover the skies and tighten the blockade.
As the American boats cut through the water to control two boats that complied with orders under the pressure of the blockade, the third boat refused to surrender, attempting to escape in a desperate maneuver. At this point, the helicopter intervened to resolve the situation; with pinpoint accuracy, a sniper from the Coast Guard team fired decisive shots targeting the boat's engines directly to disable them and immobilize its movement.
In a dramatic moment captured by the Coast Guard's cameras, the smugglers jumped into the Caribbean waters to escape their disabled boat, revealing the human aspect at the heart of the confrontation; the aircrew itself rushed to throw a life ring to the smugglers, rescuing them from drowning without any injuries.
The swift operation resulted in the seizure of 6,085 pounds (over 3 tons) of pure cocaine. While U.S. authorities did not disclose the identities or exact numbers of those arrested, nor the extent of coordination among the three boats, the confiscated shipment was on its way to the "Everglades" port in Florida, to be unloaded and to mark the end of one of the most severe blows dealt to international smuggling networks this year.
