كان جيمس إرنست هيتشكوك (70 عاماً) قد أُدين باغتصاب وقتل فتاة تبلغ من العمر 13 عاماً، وهي ابنة زوجة شقيقه، في يوليو عام 1976. وتشير سجلات المحكمة إلى أنه انتقل قبل أسابيع من الحادثة للعيش في منزل شقيقه بضواحي أورلاندو.
اعترافات وتحقيقات
ووفقاً للمحققين، أقرّ هيتشكوك عقب توقيفه بأنه عاد إلى المنزل بعد ساعات من شرب الكحول وتعاطي الماريغوانا، قبل أن يعتدي على الفتاة داخل غرفتها. وأضافت التحقيقات أنه عندما هددت الضحية بإبلاغ والدتها، حاول منعها من المغادرة وقام بخنقها.
تصاعد العنف
أفادت السلطات بأن المتهم نقل الفتاة إلى خارج المنزل، واعتدى عليها بالضرب وخنقها حتى فارقت الحياة، ثم ترك جثتها بالقرب من شجيرات مجاورة قبل أن يعود إلى المنزل ويتصرف بشكل طبيعي.
مسار قضائي طويل
رغم اعترافه الأولي، تراجع هيتشكوك خلال محاكمته وألقى باللوم على شقيقه. وقد صدر بحقه حكم بالإعدام عام 1977 بعد إدانته بالقتل من الدرجة الأولى، قبل أن تمتد القضية عبر سلسلة من الطعون وإعادة المحاكمة، وتبعت ذلك سنوات من الاستئنافات، وأعيد الحكم عليه بالإعدام أعوام 1988 و1993 و1996.

James Ernest Hitchcock (70 years old) was convicted of raping and murdering a 13-year-old girl, the daughter of his brother's wife, in July 1976. Court records indicate that he had moved to live in his brother's house in the suburbs of Orlando just weeks before the incident.
Confessions and Investigations
According to investigators, Hitchcock admitted after his arrest that he returned home hours after drinking alcohol and using marijuana, before assaulting the girl in her room. The investigations added that when the victim threatened to inform her mother, he tried to prevent her from leaving and strangled her.
Escalation of Violence
Authorities reported that the accused took the girl outside the house, assaulted her, and strangled her until she died, then left her body near some nearby bushes before returning home and acting normally.
A Long Legal Battle
Despite his initial confession, Hitchcock recanted during his trial and blamed his brother. He was sentenced to death in 1977 after being convicted of first-degree murder, but the case extended through a series of appeals and retrials, followed by years of appeals, and he was resentenced to death in 1988, 1993, and 1996.
