شهدت مدينة سطيف، شرق الجزائر على بعد نحو 267 كم من العاصمة، حادثة تخريب جديدة طالت أحد أشهر معالمها السياحية والتاريخية: تمثال «عين الفوارة»، حيث تمكن شخص مجهول من الصعود إلى التمثال وكسر ذراع المرأة الرخامية باستخدام أداة ثقيلة، وذلك للمرة السادسة.
وأظهر فيديو متداول على نطاق واسع نشرته إذاعة سطيف وعدة صفحات محلية، اللحظات الأولى للاعتداء، حيث بدا الجاني في حالة اضطراب نفسي واضح، قبل أن يتدخل مواطنون حاولوا إيقافه، ثم تلت ذلك قوات الأمن الحضري التي ألقت القبض عليه في المكان.
وأكدت مصادر أمنية وإعلامية محلية أن الضرر اقتصر هذه المرة على الذراع، وسط توقعات بأن يتم ترميمها سريعاً كما حدث في الحوادث السابقة.
وأعادت الحادثة إشعال الجدل المتكرر حول مصير التمثال الذي يُعتبر رمزاً حضارياً للمدينة من جهة، ورمزاً مثيراً للجدل.
ونحت التمثال النحات الفرنسي فرانسيس دو سان فيدال عام 1898، وتم تركيبه فوق نافورة «عين الفوارة» أو «ينبوع الوفرة» عام 1899 في قلب مدينة سطيف.
تاريخ طويل من الاعتداءات
ومنذ التسعينات، يتعرض التمثال لسلسلة اعتداءات متكررة، غالباً بدافع ديني أو أخلاقي، ففي 1997 حصلت محاولة تفجير بقنبلة أثناء «العشرية السوداء»، دمرت التمثال جزئياً وأعيد ترميمه بسرعة.
وفي عام 2006 تعرض التمثال لمحاولة تشويه الوجه بالمطرقة، كما تكررت الاعتداءات في عامي 2017 و2018 بالمطرقة والأدوات الحادة على الوجه والصدر، وفي 2025 تعرض لاعتداء آخر أدى إلى تشويه الوجه، وأصدرت محكمة سطيف حكماً بالسجن 10 سنوات على أحد الجناة.
ويثير التمثال انقساماً مجتمعياً، حيث أن البعض يراه رمزاً فنياً وتراثياً يجذب السياح، بينما يطالب آخرون بإزالته أو نقله إلى متحف لأسباب دينية وأخلاقية، وتواصل السلطات المحلية والثقافية التعامل مع الحادثة كجريمة اعتداء على الممتلكات العمومية، مع وعود بتعزيز الحراسة حول المعلم.
The city of Sétif, located about 267 km east of the capital, witnessed a new act of vandalism targeting one of its most famous tourist and historical landmarks: the "Ain El Fouara" statue. An unknown individual managed to climb the statue and break the arm of the marble woman using a heavy tool, marking the sixth time this has occurred.
A widely circulated video published by Sétif Radio and several local pages showed the initial moments of the attack, where the perpetrator appeared to be in a state of clear psychological distress, before citizens intervened in an attempt to stop him, followed by urban security forces who arrested him on the spot.
Local security and media sources confirmed that this time the damage was limited to the arm, with expectations that it will be restored quickly as has happened in previous incidents.
The incident reignited the ongoing debate about the fate of the statue, which is considered a cultural symbol of the city on one hand, and a controversial symbol on the other.
The statue was sculpted by French artist Francis de Saint-Vidal in 1898 and was installed atop the "Ain El Fouara" fountain, or "Fountain of Abundance," in 1899 in the heart of Sétif.
A long history of assaults
Since the 1990s, the statue has been subjected to a series of repeated attacks, often motivated by religious or moral reasons. In 1997, there was an attempted bombing during the "Black Decade," which partially destroyed the statue and it was quickly restored.
In 2006, the statue faced an attempt to damage its face with a hammer, and assaults were repeated in 2017 and 2018 with hammers and sharp tools targeting the face and chest. In 2025, it suffered another attack that resulted in facial disfigurement, leading a Sétif court to issue a 10-year prison sentence for one of the perpetrators.
The statue evokes societal division, as some see it as an artistic and heritage symbol that attracts tourists, while others demand its removal or relocation to a museum for religious and moral reasons. Local and cultural authorities continue to treat the incident as a crime against public property, with promises to enhance security around the landmark.
