في حادثة صادمة تسلط الضوء على خطورة الإنتان، خضعت سيدة بريطانية لعملية بتر كاملة لجميع أطرافها بعد إصابتها بحالة نادرة وشديدة من تسمم الدم، يُرجح أنها بدأت إثر لعقة من كلبها على جرح بسيط.
صراع مع الموت
ما نجيت سانغا، 56 عامًا، أمضت نحو 32 أسبوعًا داخل المستشفى، حيث خضعت لعدة عمليات طارئة، فيما أكد الأطباء أنها كانت على حافة الموت.
وفي حديثها إلى بي بي سي، وصفت التجربة بأنها «أمر يفوق الوصف»، مضيفة: «فقدان اليدين والساقين خلال فترة قصيرة صدمة هائلة، الأمر خطير جدًا ولا يجب الاستهانة به».
تدهور خاطف
بدأت الأعراض بشعور عام بالتوعك، قبل أن يُعثر عليها في صباح اليوم التالي فاقدة للوعي، مع برودة شديدة في القدمين، وازرقاق في الشفاه، وصعوبة حادة في التنفس.
زوجها، كام سانغا (60 عامًا)، روى تفاصيل اللحظات القاسية قائلًا:
«يوم السبت كانت تلعب مع الكلب، وفي اليوم التالي ذهبت إلى العمل، وبحلول ليلة الاثنين كانت في غيبوبة، كل شيء حدث خلال أقل من 24 ساعة».
وخلال وجودها في العناية المركزة، توقف قلبها ست مرات، ما استدعى تدخلات عاجلة انتهت ببتر ساقيها أسفل الركبة ويديها، إضافة إلى استئصال الطحال بسبب مضاعفات الإنتان والالتهابات المصاحبة.
تهديد صامت
يحدث الإنتان عندما يبالغ الجهاز المناعي في رد فعله تجاه عدوى ما، فيبدأ بمهاجمة أنسجة وأعضاء الجسم، ما قد يؤدي إلى فشل عضوي سريع إذا لم يتم التدخل الطبي الفوري.
ووفقًا لمؤسسة UK Sepsis Trust، يتسبب الإنتان في وفاة نحو 50 ألف شخص سنويًا في المملكة المتحدة، ما يجعله من أخطر الحالات الطبية الطارئة التي تتطلب وعيًا وتشخيصًا مبكرًا.

A Struggle with Death
Majid Sangha, 56, spent nearly 32 weeks in the hospital, where she underwent several emergency surgeries, with doctors confirming that she was on the brink of death.
In an interview with the BBC, she described the experience as "beyond description," adding: "Losing both hands and legs in a short period is a massive shock; it is very serious and should not be underestimated."
Rapid Deterioration
The symptoms began with a general feeling of malaise, before she was found the next morning unconscious, with severe coldness in her feet, bluish lips, and acute difficulty in breathing.
Her husband, Kam Sangha (60), recounted the details of those harsh moments, saying:
"On Saturday, she was playing with the dog, and the next day she went to work, and by Monday night she was in a coma; everything happened in less than 24 hours."
During her time in intensive care, her heart stopped six times, necessitating urgent interventions that ended with the amputation of her legs below the knee and her hands, in addition to the removal of her spleen due to complications from sepsis and the associated infections.
A Silent Threat
Sepsis occurs when the immune system overreacts to an infection, beginning to attack the body's tissues and organs, which can lead to rapid organ failure if immediate medical intervention is not provided.
According to the UK Sepsis Trust, sepsis causes the deaths of about 50,000 people annually in the UK, making it one of the most dangerous medical emergencies that require awareness and early diagnosis.
