أكد الرئيس الأمريكي السابق بيل كلينتون أنه لم يرَ ما يثير الشكوك خلال علاقته بالمالي الراحل جيفري إبستين، وذلك خلال جلسة استماع مغلقة أمام لجنة الرقابة في مجلس النواب الأمريكي، تناولت طبيعة علاقته بإبستين المتهم بجرائم استغلال جنسي.
وشكّلت هذه الجلسة سابقة تاريخية، إذ تعد المرة الأولى التي يُجبر فيها رئيس أمريكي حالي أو سابق على الإدلاء بشهادة أمام الكونغرس.
وأوضح كلينتون في شهادته: «لو كنت على علم بالاتهامات المتعلقة بالاتجار الجنسي بقاصرات، لما استقليت طائرة إبستين الخاصة، ولكنت أبلغت السلطات فوراً وأقود حملة العدالة».
وأكد كلينتون أن علاقته بإبستين كانت محدودة وانتهت قبل سنوات من الكشف عن جرائمه، مشيرًا إلى أن إبستين أخفى أمره جيدًا عن الجميع لفترة طويلة.
وقال كلينتون، متحدثاً من مقر إقامته في تشاباكوا بولاية نيويورك: «نحن هنا فقط لأنه نجح في إخفاء أفعاله عن الجميع لفترة طويلة»، مضيفاً: «لم أرَ شيئاً، ولم أرتكب أي خطأ».
وكان كلينتون قد سافر عدة مرات على متن طائرة إبستين في أوائل العقد الأول من الألفية، بعد مغادرته البيت الأبيض. وتضم وثائق أفرجت عنها وزارة العدل ملايين الصفحات، بينها صور تجمعه بنساء حُجبت هوياتهن.
من جانبه، وصف رئيس اللجنة الجمهوري جيمس كومر الجلسة بأنها «ودية»، مؤكداً أن كلينتون أبدى تعاوناً كاملاً وأجاب عن أسئلة حول صور له مع نساء (وجوههن محجوبة) من ملفات وزارة العدل، ونفى معرفته بأي منهن أو بأي مخالفات.
لكنه رفض في الوقت نفسه مطالب الديمقراطيين باستدعاء الرئيس الحالي دونالد ترمب للإدلاء بشهادته، رغم دعواتهم لاعتبار التحقيق غير مكتمل دون مساءلته.
وكان كل من كلينتون وترمب قد أقاما علاقات اجتماعية مع إبستين قبل إدانته عام 2008 بتهمة استدراج قاصر للدعارة، وقد نفى الرجلان مراراً علمهما بأي نشاط إجرامي، كما لم توجه إليهما السلطات اتهامات رسمية تتعلق بالقضية.
وفي سياق متصل، أدلت وزيرة الخارجية السابقة هيلاري كلينتون بشهادة استمرت سبع ساعات، أكدت خلالها أنها لا تتذكر لقاء إبستين وليس لديها معلومات حول جرائمه، غير أن كومر أشار إلى وجود تناقضات في بعض أقوالها، ملمحاً إلى احتمال دراستها من زاوية الحنث باليمين.
الديمقراطيون من جهتهم اعتبروا أن التحقيق يفتقر إلى المصداقية ما لم يشمل دور ترمب، مشيرين إلى أن اسمه ورد مراراً في ملفات إبستين، وأن علاقتهما الاجتماعية امتدت خلال تسعينات وأوائل الألفية، قبل أن يعلن ترمب قطع الصلة به قبل إدانته عام 2008، ولم تتهم السلطات ترمب بارتكاب مخالفات جنائية مرتبطة بإبستين.
وفي البيت الأبيض، أعرب ترمب عن تعاطفه مع كلينتون قائلاً إنه لا يحب رؤية رئيس سابق يُستجوب، مضيفاً أن التحقيقات التي طالته سابقاً كانت أشد بكثير.
يُذكر أن إبستين توفي داخل محبسه عام 2019 أثناء احتجازه على ذمة اتهامات اتحادية بالاتجار الجنسي، وقد خلصت السلطات إلى أن وفاته كانت نتيجة انتحار، إلا أن قضيته ما تزال تثير جدلاً واسعاً في الأوساط السياسية والإعلامية الأمريكية.
Former U.S. President Bill Clinton confirmed that he did not see anything suspicious during his relationship with the late financier Jeffrey Epstein, during a closed hearing before the House Oversight Committee that addressed the nature of his relationship with Epstein, who is accused of sexual exploitation crimes.
This session marked a historical precedent, as it is the first time a sitting or former U.S. president has been compelled to testify before Congress.
Clinton clarified in his testimony: "If I had been aware of the allegations related to the sexual trafficking of minors, I would not have boarded Epstein's private plane, and I would have immediately informed the authorities and led a justice campaign."
Clinton confirmed that his relationship with Epstein was limited and ended years before the revelation of his crimes, noting that Epstein had hidden his actions well from everyone for a long time.
Clinton said, speaking from his residence in Chappaqua, New York: "We are here only because he succeeded in hiding his actions from everyone for a long time," adding, "I saw nothing, and I committed no wrongdoing."
Clinton had traveled several times on Epstein's plane in the early 2000s after leaving the White House. Documents released by the Department of Justice contain millions of pages, including photos of him with women whose identities have been withheld.
For his part, Republican committee chairman James Comer described the session as "friendly," confirming that Clinton showed full cooperation and answered questions about photos of him with women (their faces obscured) from the Department of Justice files, denying any knowledge of any of them or any wrongdoing.
However, he simultaneously rejected Democratic demands to summon current President Donald Trump to testify, despite their calls to consider the investigation incomplete without questioning him.
Both Clinton and Trump had social ties with Epstein before he was convicted in 2008 for soliciting a minor for prostitution, and both men have repeatedly denied any knowledge of criminal activity, nor have authorities brought any formal charges against them related to the case.
In a related context, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton testified for seven hours, during which she confirmed that she does not remember meeting Epstein and has no information about his crimes, although Comer pointed out inconsistencies in some of her statements, hinting at the possibility of examining her from the perspective of perjury.
Democrats, for their part, argued that the investigation lacks credibility unless it includes Trump's role, noting that his name appeared repeatedly in Epstein's files, and that their social relationship extended throughout the 1990s and early 2000s, before Trump announced he had severed ties with him prior to his 2008 conviction, and authorities have not accused Trump of any criminal misconduct related to Epstein.
In the White House, Trump expressed sympathy for Clinton, saying he does not like to see a former president being questioned, adding that the investigations he faced previously were much harsher.
It is worth noting that Epstein died in his jail cell in 2019 while being held on federal charges of sex trafficking, and authorities concluded that his death was a result of suicide, yet his case continues to spark widespread controversy in American political and media circles.
