أعلنت المؤسسة الخيرية التي أسستها دوقة يورك السابقة سارة فيرغسون، قرارها إغلاق أبوابها بشكل نهائي، في خطوة جاءت بعد أيام قليلة من الكشف عن مجموعة من رسائل البريد الإلكتروني التي تُظهر علاقة وثيقة ومستمرة بينها وبين الممول الأمريكي الراحل جيفري إبستين، المدان بجرائم جنسية.
وقال متحدث باسم المؤسسة في بيان مقتضب: «اتفق رئيس مجلس الإدارة سارة فيرغسون ومجلس الأمناء -مع الأسف الشديد- على إغلاق المؤسسة الخيرية قريباً. كان هذا القرار قيد المناقشة منذ عدة أشهر».
وأضاف المتحدث أن المؤسسة تفخر بالإنجازات التي حققتها خلال سنوات عملها، مشيراً إلى أنها تعاونت مع أكثر من 60 منظمة خيرية في أكثر من 20 دولة، وقدمت خدمات في مجالات التعليم، الرعاية الصحية، الاستجابة للأزمات، والمشاريع البيئية.
وجاء قرار الإغلاق بعد أن نشرت وزارة العدل الأمريكية دفعة جديدة من الوثائق المتعلقة بقضية جيفري إبستين، تضمنت عشرات الرسائل الإلكترونية المتبادلة بين فيرغسون وإبستين خلال الفترة من 2009 إلى 2011 على الأقل.
في إحدى الرسائل المؤرخة في 30 يناير 2010، كتبت فيرغسون لإبستين: «أنت أسطورة. لا أجد الكلمات لأصف حبي وامتناني لكرمك ولطفك»، وفي رسالة أخرى بتاريخ 3 أغسطس 2009، شكرته على مساعدته في إتمام صفقات تتعلق بالعلامات التجارية، واصفة إياه بأنه «الأخ الذي لطالما تمنيته».

كما تضمنت بعض الرسائل تعليقات شخصية عن ابنتيها الأميرتين بياتريس ويوجيني، ما أثار قلقاً واسعاً في الأوساط البريطانية حول طبيعة العلاقة ومدى قربها من إبستين، خصوصاً أن الأخير كان قد أُدين عام 2008 في فلوريدا بتهم تتعلق باستدراج قاصر لممارسة الدعارة، وحُكم عليه بالسجن 13 شهراً فقط في صفقة مثيرة للجدل.
وكان جيفري إبستين (1953–2019) ممولاً أمريكياً ثرياً أقام شبكة علاقات واسعة مع شخصيات بارزة في السياسة والأعمال، وفي يوليو 2019 أُلقي القبض عليه مجدداً بتهم الاتجار الجنسي بالقاصرات وتجنيدهن في شبكة استغلال جنسي امتدت لسنوات. وبعد أقل من شهر، عُثر عليه ميتاً في زنزانته في نيويورك، وخلص التحقيق الرسمي إلى أن الوفاة كانت انتحاراً، رغم انتشار نظريات المؤامرة.
ويُعد إغلاق المؤسسة ضربة قوية لسمعة سارة فيرغسون، التي حاولت في السنوات الأخيرة إعادة بناء صورتها العامة من خلال العمل الخيري والظهور الإعلامي.
ويأتي القرار في وقت تُواجه العائلة المالكة البريطانية تحديات متزايدة في الحفاظ على صورتها أمام الرأي العام، خصوصاً بعد الجدل المستمر حول علاقات بعض أفرادها بشخصيات مثيرة للجدل.
The charity founded by former Duchess of York Sarah Ferguson announced its decision to close its doors permanently, a move that came just days after the revelation of a series of emails showing a close and ongoing relationship between her and the late American financier Jeffrey Epstein, who was convicted of sexual crimes.
A spokesperson for the charity said in a brief statement: "Chairwoman Sarah Ferguson and the Board of Trustees - with great regret - have agreed to close the charity soon. This decision has been under discussion for several months."
The spokesperson added that the charity is proud of the achievements it has made during its years of operation, noting that it collaborated with over 60 charitable organizations in more than 20 countries, providing services in education, healthcare, crisis response, and environmental projects.
The closure decision came after the U.S. Department of Justice released a new batch of documents related to the Jeffrey Epstein case, which included dozens of emails exchanged between Ferguson and Epstein from at least 2009 to 2011.
In one email dated January 30, 2010, Ferguson wrote to Epstein: "You are a legend. I cannot find the words to express my love and gratitude for your generosity and kindness," and in another message dated August 3, 2009, she thanked him for helping her finalize deals related to brands, describing him as "the brother I always wished for."

Some of the emails also included personal comments about her daughters, Princess Beatrice and Eugenie, raising widespread concern in British circles about the nature of the relationship and its closeness to Epstein, especially since he had been convicted in 2008 in Florida on charges related to soliciting a minor for prostitution and was sentenced to only 13 months in a controversial plea deal.
Jeffrey Epstein (1953–2019) was a wealthy American financier who established a wide network of connections with prominent figures in politics and business. In July 2019, he was arrested again on charges of sex trafficking of minors and recruiting them into a sexual exploitation network that spanned years. Less than a month later, he was found dead in his jail cell in New York, with the official investigation concluding that the death was a suicide, despite the spread of conspiracy theories.
The closure of the charity is a significant blow to Sarah Ferguson's reputation, who has tried in recent years to rebuild her public image through charitable work and media appearances.
The decision comes at a time when the British royal family faces increasing challenges in maintaining its image before public opinion, especially following the ongoing controversy surrounding some members' relationships with controversial figures.
