عاد 4 رواد فضاء بسلام إلى كوكب الأرض، اليوم (الخميس)، بعد أن اضطرت وكالة الفضاء ناسا إلى إنهاء مهمتهم على متن محطة الفضاء الدولية قبل موعدها المقرر، نتيجة حالة طبية خطيرة وغير معلنة أصابت أحد أفراد الطاقم.
رحلة الـ 10 ساعات
وهبطت كبسولة «Crew Dragon» التابعة لشركة سبيس إكس في مياه المحيط الهادئ قبالة سواحل ولاية كاليفورنيا، منهية رحلة عودة استغرقت أكثر من 10 ساعات، تخللتها عملية دخول ناري إلى الغلاف الجوي للأرض.
المرة الأولى في تاريخ ناسا
وتُعد هذه المرة الأولى في تاريخ ناسا التي يتم فيها تقليص مهمة دورية لطاقم محطة الفضاء الدولية بسبب حالة طبية طارئة.
هبوط ناجح ومشهد لافت
وسمّيت المركبة الفضائية باسم إنديفور (Endeavour)، وقد لامست سطح البحر قرب مدينة سان دييغو عند الساعة 12:45 بعد منتصف الليل بتوقيت الساحل الغربي الأمريكي، وسط أجواء هادئة، في عملية نُقلت مباشرة عبر بث مشترك لناسا وسبيس إكس.
وفي مشهد لافت، ظهرت مجموعة من الدلافين تسبح بالقرب من الكبسولة فور هبوطها، بينما كانت تطفو بشكل عمودي على سطح المياه.
وبعد لحظات من الهبوط، قالت قائدة الطاقم رائدة الفضاء الأمريكية زينا كاردمن (38 عاماً) عبر الاتصال اللاسلكي مع مركز التحكم: «من الجيد أن نعود إلى الوطن».
وفي غضون أقل من ساعة، أمّنت فرق الإنقاذ التابعة لسبيس إكس الكبسولة المتضررة حرارياً، ورفعتها إلى متن سفينة الاستعادة، قبل مساعدة الرواد على الخروج لأخذ أول أنفاس من الهواء النقي بعد نحو 24 أسبوعاً في الفضاء.
وبدا جميع الرواد مبتسمين وهم يرفعون علامة الإبهام، دون أن يتضح من مظهرهم من هو الرائد الذي يعاني من المشكلة الصحية.
فحوصات طبية عاجلة
وبسبب قضاء أشهر طويلة في بيئة انعدام الجاذبية، لم يتمكن الرواد من الوقوف بمفردهم، فتم نقلهم على نقالات طبية خاصة إلى عيادة متنقلة على متن السفينة لإجراء فحوصات روتينية، على أن يُنقلوا لاحقاً إلى مستشفى محلي لإجراء مزيد من الفحوصات، بحسب «سبيس إكس».
حالة طبية خطيرة
وكانت «ناسا» قد أعلنت في 8 يناير، قرار إعادة الطاقم بشكل عاجل، حيث قال مدير الوكالة جاريد آيزاكمان إن أحد الرواد يعاني من حالة طبية خطيرة تتطلب تدخلاً فورياً على الأرض.
ورفضت «ناسا» الكشف عن هوية الرائد أو طبيعة حالته الصحية، التزاماً بقوانين الخصوصية الطبية، مؤكدة في الوقت نفسه أن الطارئ لا يتعلق بإصابة ناتجة عن تنفيذ مهمات فضائية.
وكان من المقرر أن يجري اثنان من الرواد سيراً فضائياً الأسبوع الماضي لتركيب معدات خارج المحطة، إلا أن المهمة أُلغيت قبل يوم واحد بسبب ما وُصف آنذاك بـ«قلق طبي».
نهاية مهمة امتدت 167 يوماً
وكان الطاقم قد وصل إلى محطة الفضاء الدولية في أغسطس الماضي، ضمن الطاقم الحادي عشر الذي تنقله «سبيس إكس» بشكل منتظم، وأنهى مهمة استمرت 167 يوماً في المدار.
وخلال العودة، تعرضت الكبسولة لحرارة احتكاك تجاوزت 3,500 درجة فهرنهايت (نحو 1,900 درجة مئوية) أثناء اختراق الغلاف الجوي، بينما حافظت بدلات الفضاء المزودة بأنظمة تهوية خاصة على استقرار حرارة الرواد داخل المقصورة.
استمرار العمل في المحطة
ومن المقرر أن ينطلق الطاقم 12 إلى محطة الفضاء الدولية منتصف فبراير القادم، بينما تستمر المحطة حالياً في العمل بوجود رائد فضاء أمريكي واثنين من رواد الفضاء الروس، وصلوا إليها على متن مركبة سويوز في نوفمبر.
Four astronauts safely returned to planet Earth today (Thursday) after NASA was forced to end their mission aboard the International Space Station ahead of schedule due to a serious and undisclosed medical condition affecting one of the crew members.
The 10-Hour Flight
The SpaceX "Crew Dragon" capsule landed in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of California, concluding a return journey that lasted over 10 hours and included a fiery re-entry into Earth's atmosphere.
The First Time in NASA's History
This marks the first time in NASA's history that a crew mission to the International Space Station has been cut short due to a medical emergency.
Successful Landing and Striking Scene
The spacecraft, named Endeavour, touched down on the ocean's surface near San Diego at 12:45 AM Pacific Time, amidst calm conditions, in a process that was broadcast live through a joint feed from NASA and SpaceX.
In a striking scene, a pod of dolphins was seen swimming near the capsule immediately after it landed, while it floated vertically on the water's surface.
Moments after landing, crew commander astronaut Zena Cardman (38 years old) said via radio communication with mission control, "It's good to be home."
International Crew Members
The returning crew included: Zena Cardman (United States), Mike Fincke (United States – 58 years old), Kimiya Yui (Japan – 55 years old), Oleg Platonov (Russia – 39 years old).
Within less than an hour, SpaceX's recovery teams secured the heat-damaged capsule and lifted it onto the recovery ship, before assisting the astronauts in exiting to take their first breaths of fresh air after nearly 24 weeks in space.
All the astronauts appeared to be smiling as they gave a thumbs-up, with no indication of who among them was experiencing the health issue.
Urgent Medical Checks
Due to spending long months in a zero-gravity environment, the astronauts were unable to stand on their own and were transported on special medical stretchers to a mobile clinic aboard the ship for routine checks, with plans to later transfer them to a local hospital for further examinations, according to SpaceX.
Serious Medical Condition
NASA announced on January 8 the decision to urgently return the crew, with agency director Jared Isaacman stating that one of the astronauts was suffering from a serious medical condition requiring immediate intervention on the ground.
NASA declined to disclose the identity of the astronaut or the nature of their health condition, in compliance with medical privacy laws, while confirming that the emergency was not related to an injury resulting from space missions.
Two of the astronauts were scheduled to conduct a spacewalk last week to install equipment outside the station, but the mission was canceled a day prior due to what was then described as "medical concern."
End of a 167-Day Mission
The crew had arrived at the International Space Station last August, as part of the eleventh crew regularly transported by SpaceX, and completed a mission that lasted 167 days in orbit.
During the return, the capsule experienced friction heat exceeding 3,500 degrees Fahrenheit (about 1,900 degrees Celsius) while penetrating the atmosphere, while the space suits equipped with special ventilation systems maintained the astronauts' temperature stability inside the cabin.
Continued Operations at the Station
The Crew 12 mission to the International Space Station is scheduled to launch in mid-February, while the station currently continues operations with one American astronaut and two Russian astronauts who arrived aboard a Soyuz spacecraft in November.
