هزّت واحدة من أبشع الحوادث الإنسانية الرأي العام في أمريكا، بعد إقرار مالكي دار جنازات في ولاية كولورادو بارتكاب انتهاكات صادمة بحق 191 جثة، في قضية كشفت حجم الاستهتار بحرمة الموتى واستغلال آلام العائلات.
واعترف مالكا دار جنازات «ريتيرن تو نيتشر» في مدينة كولورادو سبرينغز الزوجان كاري هاليفورد وجون هاليفورد، بالإساءة الممنهجة إلى الجثث التي وُضعت مكدّسة داخل مبنى غير مبرّد لسنوات، خلال فترة إدارتهما للدار بين عامي 2018 و2022، في ظروف وصفتها السلطات بغير الإنسانية.
وأظهرت التحقيقات أن الزوجين استغلا ثقة عائلات الضحايا لتحقيق مكاسب مالية، إذ تسلّمت بعض الأسر رماداً مزيفاً، رغم دفعها تكاليف الحرق، بينما لم تُنفذ الخدمات فعلياً، في وقت كان فيه الزوجان يعيشان حياة مترفة ممولة من أموال العائلات المنكوبة.
ووفق اتفاقيات الإقرار بالذنب التي وافقت عليها المحكمة، يواجه جون هاليفورد عقوبة سجن تراوح بين 30 و50 عاماً، فيما قد تُحكم كاري هاليفورد بالسجن ما بين 25 و35 عاماً، على أن تُنفذ هذه الأحكام بالتوازي مع عقوبات فدرالية إضافية.
كما أقرّ الزوجان بتهم احتيال فدرالي، بعد ثبوت استيلائهما على نحو 900 ألف دولار من مساعدات إدارة المشاريع الصغيرة الأمريكية خلال جائحة كورونا، ما أضاف بعداً آخر للجريمة التي وُصفت بأنها خيانة مضاعفة للثقة العامة.
ومن المقرر أن تصدر المحكمة حكمها النهائي بحق جون هاليفورد في الـ6 من فبراير 2026، بينما يُنتظر الحكم على كاري هاليفورد في الـ 24 من أبريل، وسط غضب واسع من ذوي الضحايا الذين عبّروا عن رفضهم لاتفاقيات الإقرار بالذنب، مطالبين بعقوبات أشد تصل إلى 191 عاماً سجناً لكل متهم، بواقع عام عن كل جثة.
وتعود فصول هذه الفضيحة إلى عام 2023، حين عثر المحققون على الجثث مكدسة فوق بعضها داخل مبنى موبوء بالحشرات في بلدة بنروز جنوب دنفر، في مشهد وصفته السلطات بأنه من أكثر الحوادث إيلاماً وصادمة في تاريخ الولاية.

Investigations revealed that the couple exploited the trust of the victims' families for financial gain, as some families received fake ashes despite having paid for cremation costs, while the services were not actually performed, at a time when the couple was living a lavish life funded by the money of the grieving families.
According to the plea agreements approved by the court, John Haliford faces a prison sentence ranging from 30 to 50 years, while Kari Haliford may be sentenced to prison for 25 to 35 years, with these sentences to be served concurrently with additional federal penalties.
The couple also pleaded guilty to federal fraud charges, after it was proven that they embezzled about $900,000 from the U.S. Small Business Administration's relief funds during the COVID-19 pandemic, adding another dimension to the crime that was described as a double betrayal of public trust.
The court is scheduled to issue its final ruling against John Haliford on February 6, 2026, while Kari Haliford's sentencing is expected on April 24, amid widespread anger from the victims' families who expressed their rejection of the plea agreements, demanding harsher penalties of up to 191 years in prison for each defendant, at a rate of one year for each corpse.
The chapters of this scandal date back to 2023, when investigators found the bodies stacked on top of each other inside a building infested with insects in the town of Penrose south of Denver, in a scene described by authorities as one of the most painful and shocking incidents in the state's history.
