أعلنت النيابة العامة الروسية، اليوم (الخميس)، إدانة مواطن بريطاني يدعى هايدن ديفيز (30 عاماً) بالعمل كـ«مرتزق مدفوع الأجر»، وحكمت عليه محكمة في منطقة دونيتسك الخاضعة للسيطرة الروسية بالسجن 13 عاماً في معسكر سجن أمني مشدد، بعد مشاركته في القتال إلى جانب القوات الأوكرانية ضد الجيش الروسي.
موسكو تصف ديفيز بـ«مرتزق»
وبحسب «رويترز»، وصفت موسكو ديفيز بأنه مرتزق، مشيرة إلى أنه وصل إلى غرب أوكرانيا في أغسطس 2024، ووقع عقداً مع «الفيلق الدولي للدفاع عن أوكرانيا» (وحدة عسكرية أوكرانية تضم متطوعين أجانب)، وخضع لتدريب عسكري، ثم شارك في عمليات قتالية ضد القوات الروسية في دونيتسك، وألقي القبض عليه في شتاء 2024-2025، وهو يحمل بندقية هجومية أمريكية الصنع وذخيرة.
تفاصيل محاكمة بريطاني في روسيا
وأصدرت النيابة الروسية فيديو لديفيز داخل قفص زجاجي في قاعة المحكمة، يرتدي معطفاً أسود ورأسه محلوق، إذ يعترف بتلقيه راتباً شهرياً يراوح بين 400-500 دولار، ويؤكد إدانته عندما سُئل، قائلاً «نعم» ويهز رأسه.
ولم يتضح ما إذا كان الاعتراف تحت ضغط أو إكراه، ولم يصدر تعليق فوري من وزارة الخارجية البريطانية.
لندن: ديفيز أسير حرب
وأفادت وسائل إعلام بريطانية أن ديفيز، الذي ينحدر من ساوثهامبتون ومتزوج، خدم سابقاً في الجيش البريطاني حتى عام 2023 وتم فصله بسبب تعاطي الماريجوانا حسب بعض التقارير، ثم سافر إلى أوكرانيا عبر بولندا بحثاً عن عمل بعد صعوبات في العثور على وظيفة.
وأعربت لندن سابقاً (في فبراير 2025) عن رفضها لتصنيف ديفيز كمرتزق، مؤكدة أنه أسير حرب يستحق الحماية بموجب اتفاقيات جنيف، ومتهمة موسكو باستغلال الأسرى لأغراض سياسية ودعائية.
ثاني حكم ضد بريطاني في موسكو
ويُعد هذا الحكم الثاني على مواطن بريطاني في النزاع، بعد الحكم على جيمس سكوت ريس أندرسون (22 عاماً) بالسجن 19 عاماً في مارس 2025 لقتاله في منطقة كورسك الروسية.
وتأتي القضية وسط تصنيف روسيا للمقاتلين الأجانب في صفوف أوكرانيا كمرتزقة، مما يتيح محاكمتهم جنائياً بدلاً من معاملتهم كأسرى حرب.
The Russian public prosecutor's office announced today (Thursday) the conviction of a British citizen named Hayden Davies (30 years old) for acting as a "paid mercenary," and a court in the Russian-controlled Donetsk region sentenced him to 13 years in a high-security prison after he participated in fighting alongside Ukrainian forces against the Russian army.
Russia Describes Davies as a "Mercenary"
According to "Reuters," Moscow described Davies as a mercenary, noting that he arrived in western Ukraine in August 2024, signed a contract with the "International Legion for the Defense of Ukraine" (a Ukrainian military unit comprising foreign volunteers), underwent military training, and then participated in combat operations against Russian forces in Donetsk. He was arrested in the winter of 2024-2025 while carrying an American-made assault rifle and ammunition.
Details of the Trial of the British Citizen in Russia
The Russian prosecutor's office released a video of Davies inside a glass cage in the courtroom, wearing a black coat and with a shaved head, where he admits to receiving a monthly salary ranging between $400-500, and confirms his conviction when asked, saying "yes" and nodding his head.
It was unclear whether the confession was made under pressure or coercion, and there was no immediate comment from the British Foreign Office.
London: Davies is a Prisoner of War
British media reported that Davies, who hails from Southampton and is married, previously served in the British Army until 2023 and was discharged due to marijuana use according to some reports. He then traveled to Ukraine via Poland in search of work after facing difficulties finding a job.
London previously (in February 2025) expressed its rejection of classifying Davies as a mercenary, asserting that he is a prisoner of war deserving protection under the Geneva Conventions, and accusing Moscow of exploiting prisoners for political and propaganda purposes.
Second Sentence Against a British Citizen in Moscow
This is the second sentence against a British citizen in the conflict, following the sentencing of James Scott Rees Anderson (22 years old) to 19 years in prison in March 2025 for fighting in the Russian Kursk region.
The case comes amid Russia's classification of foreign fighters in Ukraine as mercenaries, allowing them to be prosecuted criminally instead of being treated as prisoners of war.
