The Chief of Investigations at the Jefferson County Police Department confirmed that Michelle, now 46 years old, disappeared at the age of three in 1983 in Louisville, Kentucky. Her mother, Debra Newton, claimed to have moved with her then-husband to Georgia for a fresh start, but the couple completely vanished, leaving the child's fate uncertain, prompting the FBI to classify the case as one of the most serious child abduction cases in America.
On November 24, 2025, police were able to arrest Debra, 66 years old, after one of the informants recognized her in a crime-fighting program and discovered that she had been living under a new identity in Florida with a pseudonym.
The reunion between Michelle and her father, Joseph Newton, was an emotional moment akin to a miracle. The father told WLKY, "I couldn't believe my eyes when I hugged my daughter after all these years; it felt like I was seeing her for the first time at her birth, she was like an angel."
