في تطوّر مثير، أعاد تسليط الضوء على فضائح سجن «واندزورث» البريطاني، سلّم المحتال ويليام بيلي سميث (35 عاماً) نفسه للسلطات بعد ثلاثة أيام فقط من إطلاق سراحه عن طريق الخطأ، في حادثة تضاف إلى سلسلة الإخفاقات الأمنية التي هزّت نظام السجون في بريطانيا.
وظهر سميث مبتسماً أمام كاميرات التلفزيون وهو يدخن سيجارة قبل دخوله مجدداً إلى السجن لقضاء عقوبة بالسجن لمدة 45 شهراً بتهم احتيال متعددة، وفق ما أوردته قناة «آي تي في نيوز». وكان برفقته شريكته التي عانقها قبل تسليم نفسه طوعاً.
وأكدت شرطة مقاطعة سري أن سميث أعيد إلى الحجز بعد خطأ إداري أدى إلى الإفراج عنه في اليوم نفسه الذي صدر فيه الحكم ضده، نتيجة خلط اسمه مع سجين آخر يحمل اللقب ذاته.
لكن القضية أعادت إلى الأذهان سلسلة أخطاء مماثلة، أبرزها إطلاق سراح المهاجر الجزائري إبراهيم قدور شريف (24 عاماً) المدان بجرائم جنسية والذي لا يزال طليقاً منذ الإفراج عنه بالخطأ في الـ 29 من أكتوبر.
وقال وزير العدل البريطاني ديفيد لامي إن حوادث الإفراج الخاطئ باتت «غير مقبولة على الإطلاق»، مؤكداً البدء في تحديث نظام السجلات الورقية داخل السجون لمنع تكرار مثل هذه الأخطاء. وأضاف أن الجهود مستمرة للقبض على قدور شريف الذي أُدين بعدة جرائم تضمنت الاعتداء الجنسي والتعري في الأماكن العامة.
وتعرض سجن «واندزورث» خلال الأعوام الأخيرة لسلسلة من الفضائح الأمنية، منها هروب الجندي السابق دانيال خليفة في سبتمبر 2023 أثناء انتظاره المحاكمة بتهمة التجسس لصالح إيران، إضافة إلى تورط ضابطة سجن في علاقة غير قانونية مع أحد السجناء داخل المنشأة ذاتها.
وتشير تقارير التفتيش الأخيرة إلى أن السجن يعاني من تكدس حاد ونقص في الكوادر وارتفاع في معدلات العنف، ما أثار تساؤلات واسعة حول كفاءة إدارة السجون البريطانية وقدرتها على ضبط الأمن داخل مؤسساتها الإصلاحية.

Smith appeared smiling in front of television cameras while smoking a cigarette before re-entering prison to serve a 45-month sentence for multiple fraud charges, according to ITV News. He was accompanied by his partner, whom he embraced before voluntarily surrendering.
Surrey Police confirmed that Smith was returned to custody after an administrative error led to his release on the same day the judgment was issued against him, due to a mix-up with another inmate who has the same surname.
However, the case has recalled a series of similar mistakes, most notably the release of Algerian immigrant Ibrahim Qaddour Sharif (24 years old), who was convicted of sexual offenses and has been at large since his mistaken release on October 29.
British Justice Minister David Lammy stated that incidents of wrongful release have become "absolutely unacceptable," confirming the start of updates to the paper record system within prisons to prevent such errors from recurring. He added that efforts are ongoing to apprehend Qaddour Sharif, who was convicted of several crimes including sexual assault and public indecency.
Wandsworth prison has faced a series of security scandals in recent years, including the escape of former soldier Daniel Khalife in September 2023 while awaiting trial on charges of espionage for Iran, as well as the involvement of a prison officer in an illegal relationship with an inmate within the facility itself.
