في قصة مأساوية تقشعرّ لها الأبدان، استيقظ الشاب الأمريكي دانييل ووترمان (22 عاماً) من غيبوبة استمرت 8 أشهر، فقط ليكشف الحقيقة الصادمة وراء الحادثة المرورية التي دمّرت حياته، قبل أن يلفظ أنفاسه الأخيرة متأثراً بإصاباته في ولاية فلوريدا.
وبحسب ما نقلته صحيفة «ذا صن» البريطانية عن شرطة فلوريدا، فإن الشاب ووترمان كان قد تعرّض لحادثة سير مروّعة في فبراير الماضي بينما كانت تقود السيارة صديقته ليا مومبي (24 عاماً)، الحامل بطفله. وبعدما أفاق من غيبوبته، أخبر الأطباء وأسرته أن صديقته تعمّدت الاصطدام بالشجرة بدافع الغيرة، بعد مشادة بينهما حول رسالة تلقاها من امرأة أخرى.
وقال ووترمان قبل وفاته إن صديقته صرخت قائلة: «لا يهمني ما سيحدث.. ستحصل على ما تستحقه»، ثم ضغطت على دواسة الوقود لتصل السرعة إلى 90 ميلاً في الساعة دون أن تحاول التوقف.
وأثبتت التحقيقات أن الحادثة لم تكن عرضية، إذ لم تُستخدم المكابح قبل الاصطدام بالشجرة من جهة الراكب، وأكد المحامي جون هاغر أن الأدلة تشير بوضوح إلى نية القتل. وألقت السلطات الأمنية القبض على مومبي بتهم القيادة المتهورة والاعتداء بسلاح مميت، قبل أن تُرفع التهم إلى «القتل بالمركبة» بعد وفاة ووترمان.
ووصفت عائلة الضحية ما حدث بأنه «فعل انتقامي متعمد»، وأطلقت حملة تبرعات عبر GoFundMe لتغطية تكاليف العلاج والجنازة، مؤكدين أن دانييل كان ينتظر مولودته الأولى ويحلم بحياة جديدة، قبل أن تنتهي قصته بخيانة مأساوية.

According to what the British newspaper "The Sun" reported from the Florida police, Waterman had been involved in a horrific car accident last February while his girlfriend Leah Mumbi (24 years old), who was pregnant with his child, was driving. After waking from his coma, he told doctors and his family that his girlfriend deliberately crashed into a tree out of jealousy, following an argument between them over a message he received from another woman.
Waterman said before his death that his girlfriend screamed, "I don't care what happens... you will get what you deserve," then pressed the gas pedal to reach a speed of 90 miles per hour without attempting to stop.
Investigations proved that the accident was not accidental, as the brakes were not used before crashing into the tree on the passenger side, and attorney John Hager confirmed that the evidence clearly indicates intent to kill. Authorities arrested Mumbi on charges of reckless driving and assault with a deadly weapon, before the charges were elevated to "vehicular homicide" after Waterman's death.
